Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean of Studies,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am petitioning in this letter to be added to the course PSYC271 (Winter, 2023).
To explain the extenuating circumstances that I have experienced that led to this submission of the academic appeal, I will mostly cover the challenges that I have encountered with my mental health. I have been struggling with my mental health condition as I have been fighting with low mood and motivation; these have collectively been affecting my cognition and ability to make the best decisions. After revision of my academic plan and schedule for the semester, I realized that studying courses that I am genuinely interested in has been a great help to my mental health and overall well-being.
As for the specific reason for hoping to join the class, I have been monitoring and waiting to see if I could join the course that I am petitioning to join prior to the add/drop deadline (last Friday - January 20th). However, unfortunately, I was not able to get in. Getting into this course means a lot to me, since taking the course and learning the knowledge would greatly help me with my academic career, especially in pursuing future post-graduate studies. The graduate school programs that I plan to apply to require students to be well-versed in each domain of psychology, however, I have not yet taken a course at Queen's that focuses on the neuroscience aspect of psychology. Therefore, not having this course at Queen's would put me at a great disadvantage as a candidate for future education.
I really hope to get into the course as a great motivation for my mental health condition too. I have been in contact with professional staff from Support Services and my personal counsellor, and a psychiatrist outside of Queen's to develop a well-rounded plan for my wellness moving forward to ensure my academic and overall success in university. I would continue to take my academics really seriously as I always have been but also keep working on my mental health to strive for a balance.
I would really appreciate it if you could kindly consider my petition as it would be a tremendous help to my academic career and personal well-being. Thank you so much in advance
Sincerely,
Bingyi Lin

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: As for the central goal to be added to a course - PSYC271, I have developed a well-thought-out academic plan.
1. First, I would make sure academically I would keep up the hard work that I have always been doing to keep up with the course even though I got added late. I have been proactively trying my best to keep up with the course content by reading the textbook chapters for weeks 1-3 while awaiting a response. If I could be granted to be added to the course, I would immediately catch up on all the lecture materials.
2. Second, I have been taking serious consideration of the overall course load and balance among the courses that I am taking this semester. I am currently a full-time student, and I need 13.5 credits to graduate. I really wish and hope to be added to the course since it will help me fulfill my academic goals for future post-graduate training after my undergraduate degree. Therefore, in order to maximize my academic achievement with limited course credit left, it would be a tremendous help for to me get into this course. If I could get into this course, then I would further drop one of the elective classes in my schedule right now to maintain a manageable course load of 4 classes.
3. Third, I have also developed strategies for success that personally works well for me. One of the challenges that I foresee myself might encounter is the potential to feel burned out or less motivated if I am not studying materials or courses that I am genuinely interested in. Therefore, personally, I think one of the key components to maintaining academic success is for me to invest my time and energy into courses that I am highly interested in. To combat the problem of burnout or less motivation, I have developed the skills from my past academic career and life to prioritize mental health. I would seek regular weekly or bi-weekly counselling sessions with my regular counsellor at Student Wellness Services and keep in contact with the professional staff at Support Services to proactively communicate my struggle instead of only coming in when I am in a crisis. In addition, I would seek support from student academic success services (SASS) to develop a schedule that works well for me personally to create a more structured and balanced life. I am very determined to keep moving forward and maintain my high academic achievement.
