Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Hello,

My name is Madison Boyko. I am a second year, undeclared Bachelor of Science Student. I am asking to drop my CHEM 213, CHEM 281, and PHYS 115 courses as I am facing serious and ongoing physical health issues that have negatively impacted my grades this semester. These health issues have caused me to miss in-person labs, continuously seek extensions on lab assignments due to physical illness, have at times prevented me from completing work as a result of pain and discomfort, and prevented me from taking my exams on their scheduled dates resulting in a deferral. I have also had to spend time in Hôtel Dieu Hospital, which has not only reduced my availability to work on lab reports but has been stressful and emotionally draining.

This issue has been occurring all semester, and I expect it to continue for the foreseeable future. Currently the cause of my medical problems are unknown, but I wake up every day in terrible pain (mostly in my stomach), I am always dizzy or nauseous, and there is blood in my stool every day. I am receiving medical attention and I had a diagnostic procedure on January 4th where a colonoscopy and endoscopy was performed to determine the exact cause of my health problems. However, the problem still has not been discovered and therefore I must continue with further testing. In the meantime, I have been prescribed iron pills for anemia. While these pills are intended to alleviate dizziness and hopefully lessen bleeding, after more than a month any changes to my physical wellbeing have been marginal. This shows that anemia is not the primary cause of my illness, and a substantial diagnosis and additional medical attention will be necessary.

I am a dedicated student and a hard worker, however I feel as though it is in my best interest to drop the courses, as my current grades are not an accurate reflection of my capabilities. Completing these courses with the grades I currently have would be detrimental to my academic career, especially as I am on academic probation, but causes beyond my control have prevented a higher performance. I want to prove that I understand course material and am a hard worker, but my illness has impaired my ability to do so. Considering these extenuating circumstances, I ask that CHEM 213, CHEM 281 and PHYS 115 be dropped.

Thank you for your consideration,

Madison Boyko
