Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,

My name is Mae Sacamay, I am a first year at Queens University and I am requesting to drop a course after the academic deadline.

I didn't drop it earlier because I thought I could handle staying in this course but I've been struggling these few months and I'm just biting off more than I can chew.
I live with my best friend (we were renting off campus first year). I've been living in the same room with her for the past 6 months and watched her mentally and physically decline. Despite my efforts to keep her mental health up, in the end it wasn't enough, and I wish I would have done more to prevent it, and pushed her harder to seek professional help, but it became severe, to the point that she was admitted to the hospital in February because she had become a threat to herself.
She was later discharged after being diagnosed with depression. Ultimately, this lead to her dropping out of university for healing. I had a lot on my plate because on top of being afraid of losing my best friend, I also couldn't afford our rooms full rent on my own. I'm currently struggling to find another roommate to take over the lease with me because it's the middle of the second term and it's hard to find someone who feels comfortable sharing a room with someone they do not know personally.
My mom took a few months off of work due to a shoulder injury and now can only work very minimal hours a week until she is fully recovered, so she wouldn't have the available finances to help me anyways. I just felt like I couldn't ask her for help, as that would just add unneeded stress so it's really pointless to burden her. She'd just go back to working full time, which would only further her injury, and it is really up to me to figure this issue out on my own.

Although I take responsibility for missing the drop-class deadline, I hope you can understand that I've just been mentally adjacent from school itself lately, and let the deadline go by without noticing.
I know that I won't be able to maintain 5 courses right now, especially now because I know I'm going to have to work part time in order to pay the full lease, so I'm asking you to please take my situation into consideration when making your final decision.
