Petition Letter: In order to consider my request for a late drop of MATH212, I would ask that you review the circumstances of Professor Mousavand's removal as the course professor.The textbook was not paired to the course content, he seldom finished his lectures as time was given to rants and berating of Queens University, other Math Professors and students. The elaborate stories he told to teach the theories of math were not relatable. The famous egg-throwing scene is an example.
Sadly, I began to believe as he suggested, that I was too stupid to learn this level of math. I began working with a tutor (40/hr), bought the textbook he recommended, and started learning from page one, and attended math help center. We were significantly behind in the course content.I attended every lecture and worked extra hard to understand the content. Why could I not learn it?
My mental health was taking a beating from these daily rants from the Professor. My condition, covered by my LOA, leaves me susceptible to these kinds of abusive and inappropriate behavior. The day that the Professor threw eggs at the students who did not adequately answer his questions, I was in the line of fire. This was a very triggering event for me. When he told us to get up and leave his course and off ourselves if we could not understand his math teaching, I was deeply triggered.
Despite going through this crisis, I have struggled to attend all my lectures and maintain my grades in my four other courses. I am determined to bring up my GPA this semester so that I can apply for my major in Biochemistry. I am smart enough to learn University Math as my minor and I plan to pursue it.
Our new Math Professor, professor Selk is excellent and the appropriate textbook helps a lot. I am understanding the math that should have been learned at the beginning of the course. Unfortunately, I am struggling with the current week's content as I am behind in learning the theories from previous weeks. Despite all my efforts to get on top of this course load, I must submit that the best plan is for me to repeat this course.
I believe that the facts of this situation have been investigated by the University and no doubt the effect on Students' success in the course is being monitored. I do not see a way for me to pass the course. That fail will drop my GPA and is reflective of the Professor's failure and not mine. The significant effect that this Professor's behavior has had on my life is private and is my responsibility to manage. I have taken action to survive, grow and learn from this situation. Moving on includes cutting my losses and adjusting my educational plan to repeat the course.
Thank you for considering my request to late drop when I have given considerable effort to overcome this obstacle. I will invest the time I was spending on that course in my other four courses.
