Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
I write this petition to drop course GNDS 125 Gender, Race, & Pop Culture that is a one term course for 3.0 credits. I understand that I am past both the financial and academic penalties where I will not be refunded and will receive a DR on my transcript. I have included documentation from Queen's Student Wellness provider Kelly Mannen, who I spoke to in a counselling appointment on Monday, March 13, 2023 at 9:00am.
I would like to drop this course because I am not performing to what even a decent academic potential and effort would look like for me. I experienced mental health barriers that would influence my self-sufficiency, self-image, and self-care prior to coming to Queen's and was occasionally treated through therapy. I assumed that entering university life would be an opportunity to challenge myself with independence, and therefore abandoned the use of counselling to manage my mental wellness. Unfortunately, it did not and since then I go through waves of high stress, social anxiety in tutorials, straining relationships, and loss of appetite. These struggles have become the most prevalent and recurring they have been in the past month and hinder my ability to focus on tasks at hand, balance my work, and attend classes. To cope and have time to better sort out these emotions and troubles, I feel that it would be best to minimize my workload and my presence in those environments.
With GNDS 125, I feel the least interested in the content and least motivated to complete upcoming assignments. Additionally, it is a course that is least related to my projected major, being Health Studies. Of all my other classes, dropping this course would be the most convenient, as well as least damaging to my academic progress with all my other courses either being full year credits or those applicable to me projected major. With losing these credits, I plan to take courses in the summers to catch up and stay on track with my plan.
Nonetheless, I apologize for not paying closer attention to the details of the deadlines where I missed it by not being proactive in seeking both academic and wellness support to limit these obstacles. I intend to prioritize this in the future so I can limit these complications in the future. I appreciate your time and consideration when reading this petition and I hope you understand these extenuating circumstances.
Thank you,
Sofia Merigliano
