Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To Whom it may concern,
I am writing to request permission to drop the class FILM 240 from my current semester. I have come to this decision after much thought and consideration. I believe that dropping this class will enable me to focus more on my other classes and ensure that I perform well in them. As you are aware, I am currently enrolled in several classes this semester. Unfortunately, I have found that the workload of this particular class has been overwhelming for me. Despite my best efforts, I am struggling to keep up with the material and assignments. This has been causing me undue stress and anxiety, and I fear that it will begin to affect my performance in my other classes. I understand that dropping a class is not a decision to be taken lightly, and I have weighed the pros and cons carefully. While I am disappointed to have to drop this class, I believe that it is the best course of action for me at this time. By doing so, I can devote more time and energy to my other classes and ensure that I am able to perform at my best.
Alongside the added stress and pressure of trying to maintain a high grade in my mandatory degree classes, I am also adjusting medications to both my ongoing battle with depression and ADHD which is taking a difficult tole on my mind and body. If you need to hear from my doctor or counselor, either would be willing to speak out on my behalf. Thank you for considering my request. If you require any further information or have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
Thomas Bowie

Appeal Grounds

Appeals to the Board of Studies must include a letter based on one or more of the Grounds for Appeal (Appeal Regulation 3.4). What are the grounds you are basing your appeal on?
  • The Associate Dean's decision acted without, or exceeded their, authority.

Appeal Letter

Appeal Letter: Dear Board of Studies,
Sorry for the late response, exams have been hectic and making it back to British Columbia was quite a journey. I appreciate your response and am extremely appreciative of your time. The grounds for my appeal are that Dr. Stephenson may have exceeded her authority as she graduated with her doctorate in philosophy from what I can see. Obviously, A doctorate of any sorts is respected in the academic fields, but I find it quite hard to understand how Dr. Stephenson can assess my situation regarding the balancing of prescribed anti-depressants and ADHD medication. I had to increase my dose of anti-depressants after I separated with my long-term girlfriend in early March, lost a family member at the end of March and lost another family member in the beginning of April. With all the loss in my life in such a short period of time, I began making changes. I increased the dose of my medication, took less shifts at work as I was struggling extremely hard to get out of bed some days and unfortunately, school was put on the back burner for a bit. I try to stay away from excuses as I was raised on owning up to my mistakes but the stretch from February - where I spent my 21st birthday alone because my family is from BC and couldn??t afford to fly everyone to Ontario to come be with me to April where I lost my girlfriend of 2 years and 2 family members, was both unpredictable and hard to deal with while the entirety of my support system is across the country. While my depression and ADHD are both chronic, depression comes in episodes, usually provoked by something traumatic. I feel as though my whole second semester was a test of my mental strength and I let myself down academically in all my classes but especially FILM 240. I hope this email reaches you well and you can understand how it might be a difficult time to navigate. I now have a strong balance of my medication and have also been working on my coping skills and learning new ways to manage life??s challenges. I would be more than happy to share my future plan moving forward and what my academic future will hold if you guys need more information on me.
Thank you for your time and I am sorry for this burden.
Thomas Bowie
