I am requesting a petition for a late course drop due to health concerns that affected my academic performance in the CLST 103 Roman civilization course. I was not able to drop this course in time because my health concerns became prominent after the deadline. The weekend before my midterm in this course I had undergone testing to check for breast cancer due to a lump that was found, I got a call the day of my midterm at 2:30 before the test telling me that I needed to get more testing done because my results did not look good. Between the inability to study as much as I could on that weekend and the news I received, I went to my midterm unable to focus and did poorly. I emailed my teacher after my midterm telling him about my situation and requesting a retest as the test I wrote did not reflect my learning and I was in a bad mindset worrying about the extent of my health. He rejected the request due to the fact that he cannot allow a student to take the test over again, as then he would have to let everyone who wanted to retake the test do so. Another reason why my health has affected my academic ability in this course is that I will not be able to make it to the final exam because instead, I will be in the hospital having a surgical procedure to have the tumour removed. I feel as if I am at an extreme disadvantage in this course because the course's evaluation is based on two midterms and a final exam and two of the three have been affected by my health. I had also mentioned to my professor that I have a real interest in this class and I want to do well so I plan to retake this course next school year in the right mindset and hopefully a healthy condition. I want to thank you for taking the time to review my request and I hope that you take into account the extenuating circumstances that were beyond my control, and how my health problems affected my academic performance in this class.
