Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: There were a few issues that precipitated this petition. I had various illnesses this year, including COVID which was documented with the school earlier in the year. However, for the SOCY 401 class the issues originated back in December and I just wasn't aware that I was able to do this until now. Long story short I was stuck in Toronto for a week over near the end of the exam period before Christmas which is when a term paper I had for my SOCY 401 class was due. I was stuck in an airport for 2 days and stranded in Toronto with no friends or family trying to contact the airports for an explanation and a flight home. I eventually flew home on December 25 which I can provide documentation for. Upon arriving in BC I explained to my professor my situation and he allowed me to submit the paper sometimes in early January. However, I then had to get my wisdom teeth removed on January 2 and with the limited time I had in between it made allocating time for school complicated, as I had extended family I hadn't seen in a while to spend time with. Once I returned to class I thought I could submit the paper but trying to do that while adjusting from my surgery and completing my other 5 classes proved difficult. So with all that said and done I was hoping for the opportunity to drop SOCY 401 so I could take it again next year and get a better grade.

Additionally, my ability to complete assignments and stay on top of things this semester has slipped a bit this semester due to lingering health issues brought on from a spell of COVID I had back in November. I documented a health concern with my Professor in SOCY 276 just last week for a health related issue because of an assignment we had due last week. I'm afraid I still wont be able to complete it to the best of my ability and one of my grades in the class was already affected (in my opinion) because of my inability to give my work my full attention. Because of these reasons I'm hoping I can drop this class as well.
