Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
I am writing to you today as I am petitioning to drop ANAT 316 (Winter, 2023).
Since enrolment at Queen's University, I have had registered accommodations through QSAS. The condition which I struggle with, I have had for several years and has been diagnosed by neurologists. The condition can not be fully mitigated and does not have a foreseeable end. Due to the nature of my disability, it is exacerbated during periods of stress. Although the stress response in my condition is partially predictable, it is not possible to predict to what extent it will be affected by stressors in life. The intensity of this disability greatly varies as it can allow me to be fully functioning or it can also leave me fully debilitated. I had wished to pursue this class to completion, however, my disability's interference has greatly affected my ability to contribute to this course what I truly have to offer. As I wish to pursue further education, I consider the grades that I receive of great importance. Hence, I wish to avoid a potential failing grade and take this course in the following academic year.
My disability has affected my ability to work in all classes. An important factor in my decision to choose this specific course to drop is that my disability has a documented negative effect on my memory retention. Of my presently enrolled courses, I have found ANAT 316 to be the most demanding with regard to memorization. Whereas my other courses by all means require memorization, I found that it has been to a lesser extent as they have a greater emphasis on material comprehension. Thus, I believe that my present memory retention would have a disproportionate influence on my ability to complete this course when compared to others I am presently enrolled in.
In order to mitigate my medical condition I am working on a plan to succeed in the future of my academic career. In addition to lifestyle changes to address my health, as of the fall semester of 2023, I intend to take a reduced course load, of which will include ANAT 316. I will be taking a summer course to partly compensate for the fewer credits during the fall/winter season. The reasoning for this is that I believe doing so will allow me to better address my condition with a more balanced academic workload. This will also allow me to allocate a greater amount of time to the fewer courses at hand.
This class could have been dropped earlier, however at the time before the deadline to drop I truly believed that I could push through regardless of my medical condition. It had not been until my well-being had worsened, after the deadline to drop, that I realized I do not have what it takes at this present point in time to complete this course. This came as a disappointment to me as the material taught in class had made me want to pursue this program in the first place.
I have worked hard to get and keep my standing at Queen's and I am very interested in the courses in which I am enrolled in and genuinely look forward to learning the material at hand now and in the future. This petition, if successful, would assist me in continuing to pursue my education with a lesser penalty to future academic endeavours. I hope that you consider this an adequate arrangement and agree that dropping this course would be the best method of addressing my predicament.
