Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Subject: Petition for CR Academic Consideration Due to Extenuating Circumstances in Computer Science Course

To Whom It May Concern,

I am submitting this letter to request your understanding and consideration for my academic leniency in the CISC 121 course due to extenuating circumstances beyond my control that directly impacted my performance during the Winter semester of 2023. This petition aims to elucidate the situation, establish a clear link between these events and my academic performance, particularly in the Computer Science midterm, and convey the measures I have taken to address the predicament.

During the previous and current semesters of Fall 2022 and Winter 2023, I faced a convergence of psychological challenges and family issues, significantly hindering my ability to focus on my studies, specifically in my Computer Science course. The major ordeal started in October of 2022 when a close family member was diagnosed with a severe illness, meaning that they immediately required my continuous support. The unforeseen diagnosis and the subsequent emotional burden of witnessing a loved one's suffering resulted in anxiety and depression.

These circumstances did not severely affect me in the Commerce courses I was familiar with. However, they profoundly impacted my Computer Science course, as I still needed to gain the foundational knowledge required to keep my head above water. In addition, due to the emotional turmoil, I struggled to concentrate and allocate the time and mental effort necessary to understand and practice essential concepts and algorithms. Consequently, my performance on the midterm exam was far below my usual capabilities.

To tackle these challenges, I took the initiative to engage in self-help strategies, such as mindfulness meditation, regular exercise, and journaling, to help manage my anxiety and depression. These practices have allowed me to regain control over my mental well-being slowly. Furthermore, I have communicated with my Computer Science professor and Commerce professors to explain my situation and request accommodations where feasible. I have also availed myself to study groups to find a way to hold myself accountable, helping me regain my academic footing.

I understand more than anyone the importance of maintaining a solid academic record and am taking steps to enhance my future performance. Therefore, I request your consideration of these extenuating circumstances while evaluating my academic performance, particularly in the Computer Science (CISC 121) course, and any potential ramifications that may stem from it.

Thank you for your time and understanding in assessing my petition for a Credit Standing consideration. With your support, I am optimistic I can surmount these challenges and successfully continue my academic journey at Queen's University.

Sincerely,
Kelvin Ji
