Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,
background information: I was on my ADHD medication for one year in 2020-2021 but it caused me extreme physical side effects. Due to this it was recommended to me that I change the brand of medication I was taking. This is why I had to stop taking the medication in the first place.
I have had a very difficult year and it has affected my grades tremendously, specifically SOCY 235, Race and Racialization and SOCY 225, Sociology of Globalization. I have ADHD and a likely anxiety disorder; this has been the main reason behind my falling behind this past year. Last year, I tried getting an appointment with a psychiatrist to go back on medication for my ADHD and see what could be done for my anxiety. However, due to COVID, I was met with a year and a half long waitlist before my referral reached a mental health specialist (I made my referral in November of 2021 and my appointment with the psychiatrist is April 11, 2023). This long wait time not only left me having to work extremely hard to complete my first year with a good GPA, but it also exacerbated the difficulties I was having in school. After struggling in semester 1, I received accommodations, which did help the issue but did not solve it fully.
Not having access to ADHD medication made completing schoolwork to the best of my ability extremely difficult. Being on this medication allows me to organize my thoughts, study more efficiently, understand readings better, focus better, and successfully adhere to a schedule (both a study schedule and my class schedule). Being off of my ADHD medication for this prolonged period of time exacerbated my ADHD symptoms along with my anxiety (due to me falling behind).
This has happened once before in highschool and I can provide a transcript that shows my grades in grade 11 compared to grade 12. I worked very hard to catch up, and being on the proper medication helped make that possible. If you would like to see my transcript, you will be able to see a significant rise in my grades in only one year. I have plans to get back on my medication this summer and return to Queens in the fall. I also plan on working very hard to raise my GPA, thus not making a habit of this considering I will be on the proper medication and getting the help I need.

Thank you,

Pearla Abdulnour
