Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Ms. Everson,

As discussed I am providing a note regarding my medical situation as it applies to my education at Queens University.

As you know, I entered second year at Queens University in September 2014. Prior to the start of the school year I met with Dr. Michael Condra (Director of Disability Services). My parents attended the meeting with me. It was a very difficult meeting, as I had to discuss my health issues with a complete stranger. In the meeting I explained that I suffer with anxiety and depression. Additionally, I have a sleep disorder (hypersomnolence). These challenges make school particularly difficult, especially creating a functional schedule and having sufficient energy, concentration and motivation to keep going on a daily basis. Stress will heighten my medical issues.

Having supports in place during these times is essential given my disabilities. Finding this at Queens has been tough. Despite the meeting with Dr. Condra, little support was suggested or provided. I did communicate with my Disability Advisor on an ongoing basis but I did not get much support or even timely responses to emails during times of need. This was very difficult, as it would lead to further spikes of anxiety.

During the school year I kept in touch with my Family Physician and saw my psychologist regularly. This required me to travel back to Toronto every 2-4 weeks. My medications were changed and this was really difficult just prior to the Christmas break into February. My exams became a huge challenge and completing papers was impossible. Despite these challenges I returned to Kingston after Christmas and looked forward to the new term. I decided to reduce my course load given my situation. I was committed to completing my year and worked as hard as I could. The winter was very challenging as it was extremely long and dark. I found it hard to get out of bed but pushed myself.

I have worked diligently this term and wish to complete all of my courses this year as I am trying to stay on track to graduate with my peers. This summer I will be taking two half courses and a full course. This is very important to me as I believe that my Liberal Arts education is helping to create both a present and future for me. I wish to finish my outstanding courses and plan to do so early on in the summer.

Lastly, the community of Queens University has meant a great deal to me. This year I have been an active participant as the; Clubs Deputy (for all of the clubs on campus) , Fund Raising Coordinator for the Free the Children Committee and the Vice President of Social Affairs for Hillel. These activities have allowed me to give back to the community to which I have become a member. This involvement helps to make Queens University and Kingston a better place to live and learn, as well as keeping me involved in positive experiences. I was honoured (and surprised) recently to receive the ¿¿Jeffrey McCarthy Award for Outstanding Individual Contribution¿.

I look forward to continuing my education at Queens and will work hard to create successful outcomes.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Sincerely,
Marlee Satok
