Petition Letter: To Whom this may concern,
During the winter semester of my first year, I really began to struggle with the course load. As the year was coming to an end, I became very anxious and stressed about school as well as finding a job that would help me pay for tuition. A step back in a personal relationship also took a major toll on my overall mental health, isolating me from family and friends that did not allow me to feel as if I have a major support system. My anxiety and stress levels did not allow me to do my work to the best of my ability and for FILM 110, I failed to hand in an assignment at all that affected my overall grade for the year. I was doing perfectly well in the course and was working to the best of my abilities however as the year was nearing an end I became increasingly overwhelmed. This did not allow me to put my best effort into the course. I can tend to be an anxious person and when anxiety or stress takes over, the only thing I can do is take time for myself and at the time, that did not allow me to work effectively in this course. I am now working at improving my overall GPA and do not want this grade on my transcript as it is not a reflection of how I am as a student. I understand that this will put me behind on my course to graduation but I am already planning on taking multiple courses over the summer to make up for the course dropped. My stress and anxiety is improving greatly in terms of school and it is important to me that my grades reflect that. After this incident, I opted out of taking summer school for the time being and instead worked on my stress management and working full-time over the summer. This allowed me to take care of my anxieties surrounding paying for school and focused on being busy full time and dealing with the stress of it before the school year began again.

New Information: Going forward, I do have a plan so this does not happen again. I am better managing my stress by taking mental health breaks when needed. Taking walks or spending time with friends will allow me to not be as overwhelmed and anxious about school if I am able to occupy my mind with other things.
I am taking two courses over the summer and an extra course the upcoming fall semester to make sure that I stay on track for graduation. Doing these courses over the summer in the comfort of my home with my family around me will allow me to feel less anxious and remind me that I have a support system near by.
For the following years, instead of trying to manage my stress on my own, I will reach out to the many services that Queens offers, particulary during exam season.
Those are a part of my plan to ensure academic sucess and imporving my grades and stress moving forward. I am thankful for the oppourtunity to study and learn at Queens and it is important to me that my grades reflect my successes and not the times I truly struggled.
