Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Academic),

a. The Request:
I am petitioning to drop PHYG 216 (Winter, 2023).

b. Extenuating Circumstances:
I am a mature student attending Queens University working towards a degree in Life Sciences online. Over the past 5 years my husband had been on dialysis, and we have experienced many health issues along the way that have been out of our control. He started in Sept 2018 doing peritoneal dialysis at home but in the Fall of 2021, he got a really bad infection that required him to switch to hemodialysis. During this time I learnt to do his dialysis at home and became his primary care giver, along with working a full time job from home and taking care of 3 children. I have also continued my studies as Queens University during this time. For the Winter 2023 term I was enrolled in 3 courses. In March we found out that he was close to the top of the transplant list. We were in and out of Toronto General Hospital for his blood/testing workup for his transplant during March and then on March 27th we got the call for the transplant and by the evening it was completed. He spent over a week in the hospital and now he has a long road to recovery with many hospital appointments and blood work multiple times per week. For me being a parent with 3 young children, working full time, and being my husbands primary caregiver, I did find it difficult to keep up with my 3 courses.

For the PHAR 370 and HLTH 230 all my assignments had been completed and submitted prior to my husbands surgery. For PHYG 216, I had 2 major assignments that I received an extension for April 28th but I have not been able to complete them. I was also able to get a deferral to write the exam for these 3 courses, which are the week of May 8th. Considering my current situation, I am hopeful that I will complete PHAR 370 and HLTH 230, but considering the amount of pending work for PHYG 216 and based on my discussion with Dr. Ward, I think it would be best if I was able to drop this course based on my current situation.

c. Future plan
I am petitioning to drop PHYG 216 late and proposing to retake the course in the summer session. Also, considering the number of courses only remaining for me to complete my degree I am hoping to graduate May 2024. I am also currently enrolled in CHEM 281 for the Summer 2023 term since it is only offered in the summer.

Thank you,
Sukhvir Hundal
