To whom it may concern,

Re; Request to Appeal - Olivia Idone

This letter is to inform you that I am requesting to withdraw from the following winter-term course: SOCY 389.

Towards the end of November, 2021, I was diagnosed with a major depressive episode. This led to my inability to focus on minor tasks, let alone course assignments and final examinations. Specifically, I was unable to complete final assignments such as essays, research proposals, and take-home exams. In addition to my inability to concentrate, I experienced a lack of motivation, anhedonia, and a constant struggle with my sleep schedule. I have taken the necessary steps to overcome this episode by following the treatment plan prescribed by my physician. However, I have come to realize that improving my mental well-being is not a linear process. Being overly optimistic, I believed I could continue my studies as I did prior to being diagnosed with a major depressive episode. Unfortunately, I struggled immensely with completing all of my courses over the winter term. Even with the help of academic resources and support from university personnel, I was only able to complete three courses. Accompanying this letter is a note from my physician and an updated mental health verification form further explaining my diagnosis.

As this is my first experience dealing with a mental health issue, I am slowly beginning to understand which treatments and medications work best for me and my situation. I am proud of the progress I have made thus far and believe that I will be able to complete my degree to the best of my ability.
