Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Jenn Stephenson,
I am petitioning to drop the PSYC 342 The Psychology of Social Influence course for Fall 2022 after missing the drop deadline due to extenuating circumstances.
I was ill during the December 2022 exam period before my PSYC342 exam on December 16. Despite my efforts to seek assistance from Student Wellness, I needed help to obtain the documentation for an extenuating circumstances request, as they were following a new policy. I pursued other care and received a physician's note, submitted as part of a long-term extenuating circumstances request. The letter covered the period from December 16 to December 21, 2022. Unfortunately, I could not write my PSYC342 exam.
I was offered two options for taking the exam, either on January 15 or during the April session. Initially, I had chosen to take the exam on January 15, assuming I would have fully recovered from my illness during the Christmas break. However, upon my return, I found that I was still quite unwell and could not take the exam then.
My original deferred exam date was scheduled for January 15. I attempted to make it to the campus for the January 15 deferred exam, but I had to leave and return home due to feeling extremely uncomfortable and uneasy. Unfortunately, this resulted in my inability to attend the exam, so I was rescheduled for the April session. The professor and accommodations coordinator was gracious enough to reschedule for April 29.
I want to explain my absence during the scheduled April 19th exam. The last communication I received and checked regarding the April exam was in February, when I was told that my possible time slot was noted for the exam. However, the confirmation for the specific exam date and time only came on April 25, after I had completed my last exam and started my summer job. Unfortunately, I could not check my emails until April 28, when the exam was only one day away, and I could not make arrangements to attend due to being in Ottawa. I understand the importance of attending scheduled exams and taking full responsibility for my mistakes.
After missing the PSYC342 examination due to illness during the Fall 2022 exam period, I contacted my professor to explore options for moving forward. With my professor's support and guidance, I have petitioned to drop the affected course(s) despite missing the drop deadline.
Thank you for your understanding,
Nelly Kaliza

New Information: I want to add this to my petition letter.

This course was consistently affected by my extenuating circumstances since January and December, which resulted in me missing the examination on April 29th. Unfortunately, these circumstances persisted past the drop deadline, which made it possible for me to drop the course with a petition.
I am happy to report that my extenuating circumstances have been resolved, and I can now successfully return to my studies. I have fully recovered from the illness that affected me earlier this year, and I am taking more precautions to ensure that I remain healthy and manage my academic workload. This term has been going much smoother for me, and I am confident I will succeed in my studies without this course weighing me down.
I plan to drop this course late and retake it in the fall or in its equivalent course, as it is required to fulfill my degree. To ensure academic success, I plan to take additional measures to prioritize my health and seek help promptly should any extenuating circumstances arise. I will also work closely with my academic advisor to develop a plan to catch up on any missed material and ensure that I am on track to graduate on time.
