Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To whom it may concern:

As of May 8th, 2023, I am sitting at 111 credits, requiring 3 courses to graduate. I am in my 5th year, with this September being my 6th year, as I was heavily delayed in graduating due to multiple major Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs).

To be able to finally graduate, I was to take 3 courses this summer to try and not fall too far behind my peers and those that I began university with. On May 1st, I had to move out of Kingston to Toronto to move into Toronto. Being a student with parents who live in Europe and no real support system here, it was very difficult to do everything and move here. Further, due to my lack of parents in the country, I had to use my savings from previous work experience to pay 5 months of rent in advance since no landlord would allow me to rent from them without a guarantor in the country.

Therefore, I spent all my time moving things in and out, returning cars, trying to understand and orientate myself within the city. Further, I was also beginning my new job, which wdas fully remote, while not having WIFI until the Thursday of last week, May 4th.

And so, after setting up my new bed frame on Friday evening, I peered down at my phone, and saw the time 00:12, May 6th. I instantly saw that I had not signed up for courses. I thought that maybe, since it was so soon after the deadline, that my choices for courses would still go through. Alas, they were all denied. After everything I had gone through and pushed through to try and graduate not too far after my peers, this was an extremely lonely and isolating letdown.

This is why I write you today, petitioning to allow me to take these classes so soon after the deadline. Right after I had figured out that I missed the deadline, I wrote an email to SOLUS as well as the 3 professors whose courses I was looking to take. I have received positive responses from 2 of those 3 professors over the weekend, with the last one not responding (as of today), which I understood due to the class starting in July.

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: As outlined above, I have dealt with many injuries that had me drop courses late/have to quickly catch up on a lot of missed work. This means I am enabled with more of an ability to catch up on these courses than most others, as I have had to do it so many times before. Further, during the fall semester, I was actually working abroad and taking the same amount of courses 3, but all at the same time, and was able to complete all of them. Once these courses are taken, that will be the end of my undergraduate career, which has been continuously delayed due to the health problems.

I thank you for reading my situation and appreciate your understanding in this. Thank you so much for the help.

All the best,
Arthur Arnold
