Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dr. Jenn Stephenson
Associate Dean (Academic)
Queen's University

Dear Dr. Stephenson,

I am petitioning the university to allow me to do a late drop in MATH 121 and grant me credit standing status in CHEM 112.

I submitted an academic appeal back in January because of extenuating circumstances I experienced in 2022 and my appeal in relation to the completed courses from that time period were granted. The reasons for my extenuating circumstances in CHEM 112 and MATH 121 were direct repercussions of the extenuating circumstances in 2022, described in my appeal from January (please see my appeal and doctor??s note from January for more details and background information). Essentially, because CHEM 112 and MATH 121 were full year courses, my performance was directly impacted by the extenuating circumstances in 2022 (I decided to stay in these courses for the winter semester instead of dropping because I initially believed that I would be able to makeup for the fall and did not expect the following mental health flare up to have happened as a result), but furthermore and more impactfully, put me in a situation where I was experiencing a lot of anxiety about these two courses due to the fact that I was already so behind in the content and my marks were already so low, that it felt impossible to catch up. This led to symptoms of my mental health issues such as lack of motivation, lack of focus, procrastination, and intense anxiety to the point of shutting down and not being able to study or complete work, which essentially created an extenuating circumstance in its own right, not relating to the reasons I was struggling in the fall. This situation obviously severely impacted my marks.

Things really started to improve with me in the new year, but these courses were two unfinished things from that period of time that continued to weigh on me and cause issues. Now that these two courses are over, I know this bad period is now well and truly over for me. Similarly to what I said in my previous petition, I would just like the opportunity to start fresh and not allow for this bad period in my life to be reflected in my GPA, which is why I would like to drop MATH 121 and get credit standing status in CHEM 112.

Thank you so much for your consideration,

Sascha Kaplan
