Petition Letter
Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,
I have chosen to file a petition for an extension of my IN grade for two of my courses from fall 2022. When filing for the original IN grade, I was dealing with mental health issues that prevented me from finishing the courses. While I expected that my issues could be resolved over the course of the winter break and following term, I found that this was not the case. Continuing to be involved in other courses made it so that not only did I have a significant amount of other course work to do, I also continued to face the same issues and felt their impact on all of my classes during the winter 2023 term. I have been struggling with anxiety and depression for the last two years, and it has been quite difficult to navigate the experience and not let it impact my school work. Additionally, I received and ADHD diagnosis that has drastically changed the way in which I am able to approach school. ADHD impacts my ability to complete assignments in a timely manner, and is often comorbid with anxiety and depression. In struggling with each of these serious psychological issues, I also had a variety of significant events occur over the course of this term. A member of my family was hospitalized for two weeks and later passed away, which had a noticeable impact on my mental health and well-being. In this time I spent increasing time with my family and found myself struggling to do my work. Attempting to catch up after this event was quite difficult. Additionally I had covid and a medical procedure take place during this term, both of which not only incapacitated me for multiple days, but had further impacts on my mental health. When I am in a period of psychological struggle, I am unable to sit and focus on readings and papers for very long, and it extends the amount of time that these activities place significantly.
I have been working to remedy these issues and have made some significant progress in the last two months, however, this came too late for to complete the outstanding course work from these classes before the IN deadline. I have spoken more with my physician, and found a comfortable balance with my medication. Additionally, I increased the frequency of appointments with my psychotherapist that have helped to build skills for approaching my work with my academic disability, and to manage periods of significant anxiety and depression. Finally, I have continued to limit the number of courses I am enrolled in per term to 3, as anything more is too much and results in incomplete work.
Both of my professors have been very kind and understanding about my situation and have both expressed that they would be happy to continue this process with me and grade my outstanding assignments and encouraged me to submit a petition.
I truly hope you will consider this petition, as I have worked very hard in both courses and do not feel that an F would accurately represent my abilities as a student. Thank you.
