Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,
I made a very difficult decision to drop two courses this past semester, Sociology 389 and French 331. I have been managing mental health issues for most of my life and the past number of months have probably been the most difficult yet. I enrolled in four courses this semester and I was able to complete my other two courses, Sociology 200 and French 389, albeit at much lower performance than I know I could have achieved.
Over the Christmas holidays I returned to the care of a psychologist I had seen in the past, which included a thorough psychological assessment that reconfirmed former diagnosis of anxiety, depression, and ADHD. I have been receiving psychological counselling for the past number of months and am awaiting an appointment with a psychiatrist to explore other treatment options, which may include medication. A letter from my psychologist is included with this submission.
In January, I applied for and was granted academic accommodations, which was helpful, however, over the ensuing weeks my condition worsened. I was finding it increasingly difficult to focus and properly manage my studies. Mornings were particularly daunting for me due to fatigue from not being able to get a good night's sleep and anxiety-induced nausea. I felt ashamed for missing classes, which only made it harder to return. My physical health was also being impacted from the lack of proper sleep and motivation to prepare healthy meals. As the semester progressed, it was becoming evident that my ability to complete all my course requirements was in serious jeopardy.
In March, I went home to be cared for by my parents and continue my counselling in-person. I continued with my studies from home but was still finding it very difficult to manage all four courses. After consulting with Student Wellness Services, I notified my professors that I was home and advised the professors of Sociology 389 and French 331 that I would not be completing their courses this semester. I love both courses and plan to re enroll in both this fall.
Though my challenges persist, my determination to obtain my degree at Queen's University remains intact. I still managed to obtain credits for two courses this semester, despite particularly difficult challenges over the past months. I understand the importance of taking care of my mental health and ensuring that I have the necessary tools and support to thrive academically. The decision to drop two courses was not taken lightly, but I believe it was necessary.
I am grateful for the opportunity to make this petition. I hope you will concur that I made the appropriate decision to drop Sociology 389 and French 331 and you will grant my late request in this regard.
I thank you very much for your time to review my situation and this submission.
Thank you,
Charlotte MacCuspic
