Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Dean Tierney,
I am appealing to drop GNDS 380 (Winter, 2023). Due to extenuating circumstances, I have not been able to keep up equally with all my courses in the semester of winter 2023, which has had the largest effect on my performance in GNDS 380. I have diagnosed ADHD which affects my ability to maintain focus in courses and readings, my ability to manage my time effectively, and my ability to stay organized. In addition, I struggle with diagnosed mental health conditions including social anxiety and depression, these conditions in combination with the effects of my learning disability have led to poor participation and organization of my academics in the winter semester of 2023. After struggling with my poor mental health and ADHD, I found myself very behind in my courses, specifically GNDS 380. This course specifically has been the most effected by my learning disability and mental health as it required a level of social participation and organization which I had not been able to provide or gain accommodations for in the winter of 2023.
While having diagnosed mental illnesses and ADHD, I struggled to contact my family doctor sooner and haven't been able to access my medical files pertaining to my learning disability and my mental health as my family doctor had previously changed. Due to this obstacle, I have not been able to access the appropriate accommodations for my circumstances. I had previously thought that I would be able to perform unaffected by my learning disability, however as my academic demands began to get more and more difficult to maintain, I had realized I needed mental help and accommodations to assist with learning disability and mental illnesses.
In the future, I plan to improve on my academic performance through a few steps. I have accessed my past mental diagnoses and have applied for academic accommodations to assist with the academic obstacles attributed to my ADHD including time management by receiving more time for assignments. I plan to continue to partake in counselling sessions provided by the university, which I started after beginning the process to drop GNDS 380 as the state of my mental health had been poorly affected by my poor academic situation. This will provide me with ways to cope with my mental illness and has additionally helped me reach resources like GLEAN. I plan to utilize studying and learning tools provided through GLEAN to keep me organized and focused on my academic course loads.
Sincerely, Sophie Binch
