Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,

I am writing to petition my required withdrawal from my program for one year. I know I must hold myself accountable for my own actions, but I'd like to explain why my grades slipped and why I am asking for this appeal, for this second chance to show you guys I am able now to put all of my effort and power into my schoolwork and raise my grades and do as well as I know I can.

The year 2022 and the beginning of 2023 was a rough time for myself and my family where we had three deaths within the family, two close family friends die as well multiple severe health scares. These took a significant toll on my mental and physical health, as my family lives in another province so I had to deal with all of the grief without my family by my side and I was unable to attend funerals and viewings. While dealing with all of this grief I still went to every class I physically could attend while also doing my absolute best to do all my assignments and quizzes, spending countless hours in the library working on my notes, associated readings, quizzes, and assignments. I was exhausted both mentally and physically.

The immense grief I was feeling while also trying to stay on top of everything hand in hand provided more stress leaving me in a terrible head space but I refused to let myself crumble I wanted to show what I was truly capable of accomplishing, but the state I was in I was not showing my actual capabilities and what I can achieve academically in the slightest I was just burning myself out by trying to do and be everything I wanted and it causes a massive decline in my grades, especially towards exam seasons, I was so drained and exhausted I was not retaining the knowledge I needed long term only bits and pieces so I did very poorly on my exams and not as well as I could have on assignments, etc.

I am ready to do everything that needs to be done to be granted this second chance, I know I'm capable of it all and with the guidance of the academic advisors to ensure my plan goes exactly how it needs to go I will prove I am worthy of this second chance and to not have to take this year off. I'd like to thank you for this opportunity to explain.

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: Plan wise I had begun looking into courses that I can take which will help me boost my GPA that are within my realm of interest, have begun thinking of lightening my course load to either three or four classes a semester as well, I will also be taking advantage of academic advisors and get appointments to run over the idea of my course load and classes I have in mind of taking to solidify the plan and work around with my class schedule to create a schedule that has my classes situated in a way that I am able to have a good lecture, tutorial, lab, and study space balance that promotes productivity without burning myself out, this way my true capabilities and that I can prove that I am able to bring my class grades and overall GPA to good standing.

Through looking on solus at classes available, i know there are classes i can take that will help me bring my GPA up while also benefitting me as well for my success of my required courses for my degree

I have already been talking to one faculty member briefly and will continue to be in contact with faculty members, make academic advisory appointments to push my plan further along and weigh the different options i have mentioned above.

previously I had packed my schedule heavily at the beginning of the week to get most of the lectures, labs, and tutorials in around the same time, but due to my circumstances that did not work out in my favour and caused more stress so i am working towards creating a strong balance between everything as stated above as well.

I know with the planned ideas i have i can ensure academic success and a good standing GPA, and i will show that i have the drive and ambition to do so given i have the chance to show it in this upcoming fall and winter semesters.

Appeal Grounds Details: The grounds on which i am appealing the associate deans decision is that while she could tell i was eager and wanted to get back to classes she did not see in my petition that i was managing my circumstances properly enough to ensure academic success.

so i am appealing as the things i did and continue to do to manage and improve my well being were not fully stated in the petition letter as i was under the impression based on the documents provided by the school to mainly outline my circumstances that caused the issues to give an understanding of everything that happened and how i was affected, which is why the things i did to cope and manage were not properly stated.

so i would like to provide details about what i did to fill in the gaps that were missing for the associate dean to have a full understanding of everything.

Letter of Explanation for Appeal

Dear Board of Studies,

I am writing to appeal the associate dean’s decision to deny my petition to waive the requirement to withdraw from my program for one year on the grounds that in my original petition some of the information that should have been relayed was not properly relayed in the letter that was provided.

The petition did not overview some of the ways that I was managing and continue to manage the extenuating circumstances I was under, so I would like to present some of the things I had done and ways I am continuing to branch out and utilize all Queens has to offer for support to ensure academic success and maintain good health.

During these difficult times I had reached out to some specialized grief councillors but was unsuccessful with becoming a patient of theirs but through their process to get ahold of them emails were made explaining the grief I was suffering and why I was looking for help and through that process it helped by getting things off my chest and they did see it, but had too many patients to take me on. After that I branched out to grief platforms and decided that because getting things off my chest with no judgement, I submitted documents to grief platforms read other peoples, talked to some grief people online about how all of their outstanding work on grief and grief management had helped me feel less alone and was helping me.

Those platforms and people on them helped me quite a lot and made me realize asking for help and getting help is completely ok and good for everyone even if you aren’t grieving.

The past little while I have been in contact with the undergrad assistant in my department and she has been helping with questions I have about courseloads, courses that could be beneficial for me, talking about options within queens to utilize for therapy, counselling, etc. she has been quite helpful throughout this process and has done a lot aiding me in the best ways to ensure success academically and for my well-being, these resources I have been utilizing and the other resources I am looking into utilizing better at queens, helped manage my circumstances and I will continue to use these resources because over this past year I have begun to wholeheartedly accept help and reach out to ensure I do not fall into a place I was in before.

As well as utilizing the facilities and people available much more I am going to reduce my course load to 4 classes a semester ( which I have already put into my course planner on solus)

I hope through reading this letter you recognize the efforts I am and will continue to put forth In regards to my circumstances and my academics, thank you so much for your time.
