Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean
I hope this letter finds you in good health. I am writing to bring to your attention a matter of academic concern regarding my grades in two specific courses, ECON 255 (Introduction to Mathematical Economics) and ECON 212 (Microeconomic Theory). I kindly request your assistance in reviewing these grades, as they significantly impact my academic progress and future goals.
Throughout the semester, I dedicated substantial time and effort to both ECON 255 and ECON 212. I actively engaged in class discussions, sought clarification during office hours, completed all assignments diligently, and prepared thoroughly for exams. Despite my sincere efforts, my performance in these courses did not reflect my understanding and grasp of the subject matter to the extent I had hoped.
In addition to the academic challenges, I faced personal circumstances that impacted my ability to fully focus on my studies. During this semester, my mother was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer and commenced a rigorous treatment plan involving chemotherapy and radiation therapy. As the eldest child of three children and primary caregiver, I took on significant responsibilities to support my mother throughout her treatment journey. I have been for the last year driving the 350kms back to my hometown for extended periods of time to help my mother with her appointments and doing the tasks she would have been doing for my younger siblings; cooking, cleaning, school, appointments and even their parent teacher interviews.
This summer I have been working as a junior consultant at KPMG. I have been commended for my problem solving skills, but they seem to only apply to business entering the Canadian market. My supervisor has said to me that if I keep up the good work I might have a chance to work full time after grad. This would help me and my family out a lot as with the extra income I would be able to take the financial burden of my mother.
The emotional and physical toll of witnessing my mother's battle with cancer while simultaneously juggling my academic obligations was overwhelming at times. I strived to strike a balance between caring for my mother, attending medical appointments, and maintaining my academic commitments. However, the stress and emotional strain associated with this situation inevitably impacted my ability to perform optimally in ECON 255 and ECON 212.
Given the importance of these courses in my academic journey, I kindly request your understanding and assistance in reviewing my grades for ECON 255 and ECON 212. I firmly believe that a more comprehensive evaluation of my coursework, taking into account the extenuating circumstances I faced, will provide a fairer assessment of my capabilities. I have received a C- in both courses which is just a few mere points away from letting me do my 300 level courses which I have 3 and my thesis, if I'm able to have my petition granted this will let me graduate this year with the rest of my batchmates and my mother hopefully if she's able, will see the first person in our family to graduate college and there's nothing else in the world she wants from me, my mother believes in me and I believe in myself.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I am grateful for the opportunity to pursue my academic goals at Queens, and I remain dedicated to achieving the highest standards of academic excellence.
Sincerely
Arjun Tanwar

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: Subject: Plan for Academic Success in the Upcoming School Year
Dear Associate Dean
To address the challenges I'm facing and to ensure a more successful academic journey I have taken several proactive steps to enhance my learning experience and performance.
Securing a tutor for future level 300 courses, in preparation for what might be next I have hired a tutor for myself who I see 4 times a week in the evening and have been going over the more advanced parts of 212 and 255 which since are prerequisites for the 300 equivalent courses will let me prepared for the incoming school year. This lets me strengthen my understanding of complex economic concepts and improve my overall performance in these courses.
I have been luckily enough to secure a 4 month consulting internship at KPMG which started in May 2023 and ends August 2023,This internship will provide me with valuable real-world experience and practical application of the concepts I have learned throughout my studies. The exposure to professional environments and the opportunity to work on challenging projects will greatly contribute to my academic growth and preparedness. My project supervisor has been commending me on my problem solving skills and has unofficially stated to me directly that if I'm able to keep performing well, I may be able to start full time after graduation.
I have sought professional support and recently engaged the services of a therapist. This decision was motivated by my desire to develop effective coping mechanisms, manage stress more efficiently, and improve my overall mental well-being. By working with a therapist, I aim to develop strategies to navigate the academic and family issues I have faced. This collaborative process will help me address any underlying concerns, develop resilience, and foster a healthier mindset. I firmly believe that by taking care of my mental health, I will be better equipped to handle the demands of my academic pursuits and achieve success.
Thank you for your time and consideration Dean and I hope to hear back from you.
Sincerely
