Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,

I am requesting a Credit (CR) standing in three of my courses: MATH 121, PHYS 117, and CHEM 281. I have completed and passed all of the work in these courses, but because of extenuating circumstances beyond my control, earned a substantially lower grade than expected.

I have suffered from ongoing mental health issues for several years that worsened upon entering university. The effects of these issues affected my abilities to focus on my studies and cope with the workload. My mental health problems interfered with my ability to concentrate when studying and retain information. The workload of five courses was extremely stressful and difficult to manage, which led to increased mental health issues. Furthermore, it affected my energy level in that I was often unable to go to class and allocate enough time for doing work. As a result, I was unable to academically perform to my fullest capacity. I feel that the grades received in these courses do not accurately reflect my academic capabilities.

It was not until January 19, 2015 that I was able to seek the proper treatment for my health problems. The severity of the situation required that I be hospitalized and take a three-week absence from school. Now I am under the care of a physician and was able to complete the winter term of my second year.

I hope you take my situation into consideration when deciding whether or not to accept my appeal application. I am an extremely hardworking student and feel that my mental health problems have prevented me from performing to my fullest capacity. If you grant my appeal, moving forward I will continue to be under the care of my physician and strive to achieve academic success by taking a lighter course load.
