Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean (Academic),
Hope you are well. I am appealing to drop BIOL 300 (Fall, 2022), BIOL 330 (Fall, 2022), and BIOL 339 (Fall, 2022).
In September 2022 I made the decision to move from Kingston, Ontario back home to Richmond Hill, Ontario. I was experiencing bouts of major depressive episodes which resulted in persistent sad mood, irritability, decreased energy, increased fatigue and difficulties in focusing and concentration. During this difficult period, I felt I needed a support system from my family while attempting to commute to Kingston weekly to maintain my studies. However, I found the course load unmanageable and rigorous as a result I failed all three of the courses I was taking in Fall 2022. This poor period reflected badly on my studies and did not properly exemplify my ability to do well at Queen’s because I was not taking the proper steps to seek professional help. These extenuating circumstances caused me to not be able to prepare adequately for my assignments or attend classes consistently or even focus on the classes I did attend.
However, I have now taken a proactive role in maintaining my mental health and realistically tackling my studies. After my fall classes concluded I have been consistently seeing a psychologist Dr. Lynne Lamarche at the Centre for Cognitive Behavior Therapy to aid me in treating my major depressive episodes. I have been attending weekly sessions since January and am presently still seeing her (June) and intend to keep seeing her. In addition to seeking professional help, I also had a meeting with an academic advisor on May 12th with Jenna Kring.
Together we established a plan to help me graduate by pursuing my degree on a part time basis. Assuming I was able to drop these courses late, I would then plan to take only a single course BIOL 300 (Ecology) in Fall 2023 commuting three times a week for classes and lab work. Then taking my remaining 400 level courses specifically I am intending to take BIOL 411 (Global Change Biology) and BIOL 422 (Conservation Biology) in Winter 2024. And finally completing my remaining Math 121 credit in Summer 2024. After the discussion with Ms. Jenna Kring and Dr. Lynne Lamarche, I have dedicated myself to a manageable course load to ensure success and feel I have a much better grasp on what is required of me.
I appreciate the consideration, thank you very much.
Sincerely,
Alishewa Aziz
