Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Office of the University Registrar,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to express an appeal regarding a course which was auto-enrolled during the Spring/Summer term of 2021. Titled Exploration of Creativity, this course was instructed by Sidneyeve Matrix, coded ENIN 140 under the Dan School of Drama and Music. This was auto-enrolled following the first course for a certificate program I am currently pursuing. I was not successful completing Design Thinking, coded ENIN240, instructed by Chip McCrimon. Despite reaching out to the university for academic support, several external factors impacted my ability to successfully complete the coursework required at that time. While I had worked to mitigate the impact of failing ENIN240 in the Winter term of 2021, I hadn’t withdrawn from ENIN140, which was auto enrolled in the following term.
I am reaching out to you today to provide a bit of background information on my situation. In January of 2021, I was supporting a loved one who sustained a traumatic brain injury, which was a life-altering event that required a great deal of my time and attention. Additionally, I was facing challenges with my employment and transitioning residences, and I was also struggling with my mental wellbeing, making it difficult for me to access the support I needed to complete my coursework. I understand it is solely my responsibility to mitigate challenges presented to my learning outside the classroom, and also to maintain my academic calendar, however the combination of growing pressures outside the classroom made it increasingly difficult to do so. Given my best efforts, I was unable to bridge the barriers to learning presented at that time.
Despite these challenges, I am now in a better place and have implemented support systems to address the academic repercussions of failing ENIN240. However, the financial burden of the course ENIN140, which was auto-enrolled, would create additional barriers to entry regarding completing the academic upgrading program with the university. I am writing this appeal to request your assistance. In helping me to retake the originally unsuccessful course and successfully complete my upgrading program, my ultimate goal is to progress in my academic pursuits. I believe that this would be the most mutually beneficial resolution to address my situation while maintaining a relationship of excellence with my Alma Mater.
