Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to you as a dedicated student who has faced significant challenges during my past two years at Queen's University. I would like to share my struggles with mental illness and subsequent diagnosis during this period. Furthermore, I kindly request a waiver of the requirement to withdraw for one year, as I firmly believe that I can improve my GPA and that my extenuating circumstances significantly contributed to my poor academic grades.
Throughout my academic journey at Queen's University, I have been grappling with various mental health issues that have had a profound impact on my ability to perform at my full potential. These challenges have included anxiety, depression, addiction, and borderline personality disorder, which is considered a permanent disability. I also had to deal with a false diagnosis and uncertainty on what was going on with me. Unfortunately, these circumstances have greatly affected my academic performance, hindering my focus, attendance, and timely completion of assignments.
I must acknowledge the tremendous support and resources provided by the university’s counseling services, which have been instrumental in my path to recovery and personal growth. Through therapy, potential medication, and self-care practices, I have made considerable progress in managing my mental health challenges. With the guidance and understanding of my healthcare professionals, I have developed effective coping strategies and acquired the necessary skills to navigate the academic environment more successfully.
Acknowledging the importance of my education and my commitment to my studies at Queen's University, I am determined to regain my academic standing and prove my capabilities as a diligent and dedicated student. Despite my struggles, I firmly believe that I have the capacity to improve my GPA and achieve the academic success I am capable of. I am currently taking summer courses to raise my GPA as well and show my strong desire to remain a Queen’s Student.
Considering the extenuating circumstances surrounding my mental health during the past two years, I kindly request your compassionate consideration in waiving the requirement to withdraw for one year. Granting this waiver would allow me to continue my studies uninterrupted and enable me to actively work towards improving my academic performance. I am confident that with the ongoing support of the university, combined with my personal growth and improved mental well-being, I will be able to achieve the academic standards set by Queen's University.
I understand that academic policies and procedures exist to maintain fairness and uphold the university's academic standards. However, I believe that my situation warrants an exception due to the extenuating circumstances I have faced and the evidence of my ongoing improvement. I am more than willing to provide any additional documentation or evidence required to support my petition.
Thank you for considering my request. I genuinely appreciate the support and understanding that Queen's University has demonstrated towards students' well-being and personal growth. I remain committed to my education and am determined to make the most of my academic journey at this esteemed institution. I eagerly await a favorable response and the opportunity to continue my studies at Queen's University.
Yours Sincerely,

Aaliyah LaFleur
