Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean of the Faculty of Art and Science:
I am petitioning the Faculty’s decision that I must withdraw from Queen’s for one year due to my lower GPA.
I am deeply sorry that some unexpected circumstances beyond my control caused me to suffer from mental and even physical discomfort in the later stage. After the unsealing of the Chinese government without warning, the novel coronavirus spread in China on a large scale along with a large population flow, which led to my family being infected with the novel coronavirus one after another at the end of February. Due to the lack of adequate medical security and medicine, my family was too weak to get in touch with me during that period, which made me very anxious and depressed. After learning that one of my relatives died due to the infection of the novel coronavirus, my anxiety and depression gradually worsened, and even a series of adverse physiological reactions, such as insomnia, nausea and vomiting, affected my academic performance. Since I did not have any understanding of mental illness at that time, I always thought that I could get better by waiting for this sad period to pass, but the fact is that even after a period of time, my negative emotions and psychological pressure still failed to ease and even some self-harm occurred, such as cutting my toenails to the point of bleeding. When I became aware of my pathological emotional problems, it was already the final exam period, and I was not able to get a timely diagnosis and treatment in Canada. Academic Plan
Academic Plan: With reference to Preparing for an Academic Plan and my past academic performance, I will mainly focus on History studies for further study in the future. If I can major in History before the autumn semester, besides my relatively good academic performance, I think I can get more thinking in the subject of history, and not only be limited to the subject of history. Also, History is a subject which rekindled my academic exploration and enthusiasm when I felt down and hopeless. At the same time, my course selection also meets the requirements of History major, but my low score makes me unable to register for History major at present. I have communicated with Undergraduate Program Assistant in this regard, and she said that if I can improve my score before the fall semester, I will still have the opportunity to major in History in F23. I signed up for two history courses from May to July, not only to make up for my lag in academic planning but also to better understand the thinking mode of history and to improve my academic performance and lay a certain academic foundation for the coming F23. I sincerely hope that if I have the opportunity, I can actively correct my low academic performance in the next semester, and I will seek professional academic and mental help as much as possible instead of acting alone behind closed doors.

At the same time, during the Summer term, I will actively cooperate with the hospital's treatment to restore my mental state, strive to overcome my anxiety and depression, and earnestly complete the two summer courses I have chosen, so as to make full academic and psychological preparation for the upcoming F23 semester.
