- The Associate Dean's decision did not follow the rules of procedural fairness. A breach of procedural fairness includes such things as the Associate Dean failed to:
- Make a reasonable decision in your appeal. A “reasonable” decision is one that is based on evidence, thought out and supported by facts and logical inferences from the facts. To be reasonable, the decision must contain adequate reasons for the conclusions.
Appeal Grounds Details: Dear Board of Studies,
I am appealing the Associate Dean’s decision to deny my appeal to waive the Requirement to Withdraw for a Minimum of one year and to drop failed courses from the past academic year. In this letter I hope to share the progress I have made since my last appeal and provide additional updated documentation from my doctors, better highlighting how my condition effected me specifically this year and to what extent, something that Associate Dean Stephenson noted was lacking when my first appeal was denied.
I am appealing the Associate Dean’s decision to deny my appeal to waive the Requirement to Withdraw for a Minimum of one year and to drop failed courses from the past academic year. In this letter I hope to share the progress I have made since my last appeal and provide additional updated documentation from my doctors, better highlighting how my condition effected me specifically this year and to what extent, something that Associate Dean Stephenson noted was lacking when my first appeal was denied.
Appeal Letter
Appeal Letter: As noted in my original appeal, I had started a new treatment plan towards the end of the school year. This included introducing a new medication called Verapamil and replacing some of the old medications I had been using that gave me very inconsistent results. Furthermore, we outlined a back-up plan for if this medication was unsuccessful, which included the implementation of medical Botox, a historically very effective treatment for chronic migraine sufferers. The reason we tried the Verapamil before the medical Botox is because in order to qualify for its use, you must have previously tried 2 different migraine medications and not seen substantial reduction in migraine days. That said, Verapamil has absolutely changed my life. Throughout the first 8 weeks or so I saw a slow, consistent decrease in migraine frequency and severity which left me feeling very optimistic and was around the time of my first appeal. However, in the 6 weeks since that first appeal I have only had 3 migraines total, a far cry from the usual 3-5 per week I was getting during the school year. This is easily the lowest number of migraines I’ve suffered in that time span since I can remember. I am working full time and able spend my free time exercising and enjoying hobbies, something that has had an extremely positive effect on my mental health and in turn, the migraines. Another improvement was of the 3 migraines I have had over the last 6 weeks they were all relatively short, about 3-4 hours, compared to the ones I used to get that would last upwards of 10 hours.
As stated in my first appeal, my goal is to change my degree to an online arts degree so that I can continue to make progress on my condition from the comfort of my home surrounded by my support system. I am aware that the window for swapping programs has passed, and if I am unable to make the change this year, then I plan on just taking the necessary courses for the online degree and officially change during the window next year. I truly believe that with my current progress medically, as well as the back up plan for further treatments in place, that given the opportunity to complete a degree online I will finally be successful in accomplishing this academic goal of mine.

I am currently waiting on updated documentation from my family doctor which I will be receiving in the coming days as well as documentation from my neurologist who I have an appointment with on August 5th when she returns from leave.
As stated in my first appeal, my goal is to change my degree to an online arts degree so that I can continue to make progress on my condition from the comfort of my home surrounded by my support system. I am aware that the window for swapping programs has passed, and if I am unable to make the change this year, then I plan on just taking the necessary courses for the online degree and officially change during the window next year.
