Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear, Associate Dean of Academics,
I am petitioning the Faculty’s decision that I must withdraw from Queen’s for a minimum of one year. I have experienced extenuating circumstances, beyond my control, on January 14th, 2023 I experienced the unexpected death of my grandmother, who was a primary caretaker throughout my childhood. I was then needed to travel back to my birth country, Thailand, to aid in the planning and execution of the funeral, the dates of my travel were from January 29th to February 14th, 2023. Returning from my travels, I contracted a severe case of Covid-19 near the end of February which limited my ability to maintain progress in all of my courses. The events combined further triggered my mental illness affecting my ability to perform daily tasks and as well impacting my academic performance, I was unable to meet most of the deadlines for my assignments which resulted in my failing grades for 3 of my courses, within the winter semester. In order to try to deal with my circumstances I got in contact with a mental health counsellor towards the end of March to discuss the effects of these events and compile resources that would further help me. I did not drop the course as the severity of the circumstances occurred after the drop deadline and at the time I was under the assumption that I would be able to complete the courses. The circumstances unfortunately impacted my well-being more than I could have predicted and I was not able to finish my courses to the best of my abilities. Thus I would also like to request an extension in order to complete my outstanding work for three failed grades in my winter semester courses, I would be able to complete these assignments within a month's time. Presently my circumstances have mostly been resolved, my mental illnesses are being managed with the help of my support circle as well as receiving bi-weekly counselling sessions with a mental health professional and I am now in a fit state to be able to perform academically.

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: For my future plan, if I am able to return to my studies I plan on connecting with QSAS as well as maintaining regular contact with a mental health counsellor. I further plan on making personal adjustments toward my program plan, by taking a lighter course load and potentially changing my program plan of choice. I will also connect with an academic advisor to discuss the best options and construct a plan in order to guarantee myself academic progress and success. If I am denied to request to complete my outstanding assignments for my failed courses, I plan on further petitioning a drop of the course and retaking them over the following year and spring semester. I plan on holding myself accountable and to ask for help with my struggles whether it be with my academics or personal life.
