Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Studies),

I am appealing the Faculty’s decision that I must withdraw from Queen’s University for a minimum of a year. Additionally, I am hoping to appeal some, if not all, of the courses outlined in this petition.

Throughout the course of the year I have encountered a plethora of challenges that have hindered my academic success. To start, over the Summer and Fall 2022 semesters, I encountered events that made it so I felt unsafe on Queen’s campus. The first involved me being followed home while inebriated with little to no recollection of what happened and the second of which involved me waking up in the hospital after having my drink spiked. Both of these events led me to close everyone and everything in my life off as I did not feel safe to go anywhere or do anything, which resulted in not attending classes or meeting deadlines. I felt weak and as such did not reach out to anyone at that time. Within the Winter 2023 semester, I encountered various physical maladies that impacted my ability to attend my courses or complete course work. Proof of this, entirely dated, was sent to the Arts and Science Accommodations Office throughout the course of the semester. Two of my professors have allowed me to continue the courses over the summer however the other 4 have stated that I should submit a petition.

I have been proactive in ensuring receiving treatment to overcome these issues. Regarding my mental health, I have been connected with a counsellor at Queen’s that I am presently meeting with on a regular basis and am on a waitlist for more long-term treatment. As for my physical health, I am currently waiting to see a specialist while under the care of a doctor where I have been undergoing treatments as needed so I am able to return to my studies.

Thank you for your consideration,
Elizabeth Johnson

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: As I would like to ensure my success in the upcoming semester, I have given a lot of thought to what is needed for me to be successful. I have already started meeting with medical professionals and mental health specialists to ensure that I am fit to return to studies in the Fall. As there is a lot I am presently working on regarding my personal wellbeing, I am going to be dropping my course load to three courses a semester with the possibility of scaling up to more in the future. While I am presently focusing in Languages, Literature, and Cultures, I am not sure that it is the right fit for me so I will be taking a Philosophy course and a Classics course to explore other options.

One of the challenges I encountered was reaching out for help as needed. I plan to work collaboratively with my counsellor, academic advisors, and my accessibility advisor to ensure that I have the proper supports in place to succeed and feel comfortable reaching out as needed. I will also be working with an academic advisor to overcome my challenges with time-management and strategies that I can use when studying.

I know that I can succeed with the proper supports in place for my mental and physical well-being. I am presently working on two incomplete courses over the summer that I hope will help show my commitment and capabilities.
