Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
I am petitioning to late drop my 2022/23 Chemistry (CHEM 112) course due to an acute mental health illness.
I have suffered from severe diagnosed clinical Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) since 2015. I have been hospitalized as an in-patient several times. In recent years, I have made tremendous progress which allowed me to commence university studies. However, the stress of being away from family for the first time and living on my own in an unfamiliar environment triggered an acute relapse of my OCD with depression and anxiety attacks.
While I was able to complete (with accommodation and support from Queen's Student Accessibility Services) two courses, the anxiety prevented me from writing the chemistry final exam. I was granted deferrals for the exam and I endeavoured and struggled to be able to write the exam. In the end, my acute OCD prevented me from writing the exam. Accordingly, I must regretfully request this late drop.
Over the summer, I will engage in therapy and counseling so I will be in better condition to resume my university studies in September. I have also changed university so I can be in the same city as my family which will relieve much anxiety.
Attached please find the Medical Certificate attesting to this from my doctor, Fawzi Mankal, MD.
Sincerely,
Andrew Wang
