Petition Letter

Petition Letter: In April, during exam season, my grandmother lost her battle with lung cancer. I was visiting her in Brampton before and during my exam period as her condition was rapidly deteriorating. This put a lot of strain on my academics and studying. I wanted to get my exams done as quickly as I could so I could be done with that and focus on my family. I got done with my exams and immediately had a funeral and related events to attend. When I finally got home to British Columbia, I was exhausted academically, mentally, and emotionally. MATH 225 is a difficult course that requires energy that I do not have currently. I recently started going to therapy to hopefully help alleviate some of the emotions and effects of my grief. That is a process that will take time. And while I am working through that, MATH 225 has weekly deadlines I have to meet–it does not wait for my grief. I do not want to complete this course only knowing some of the material and with a bad mark–this is material that is important to future courses and I want a solid foundation in differential calculus. At this time, I do not have the capacity to complete this course to the level I want to complete it. This is a late request since I only started my therapy recently, and have only now started to realize how my grief has been affecting me. This course is taking away my time that I need to be spending with family, to help deal with both my grief and that of my family. While my family is watching movies some nights I am doing homework for my math class. I would do my math during the day however it is quite difficult to motivate myself to get out of bed some mornings. I need to spend my time with my family so we can heal together. Differential calculus does not fit into this equation.
This has affected me throughout the whole course, and will continue to affect me after the course is completed. I am seeking professional therapy now to deal with my grief, but that will take more time than this course will allow.
