Petition Letter: Hello, hope you are well.
I am asking to drop my summer classes as I have a family emergency and I have to leave the country. My grandfather is terminally ill, and his condition recently worsened extremely and I now have to go to Italy, where he lives and is being taken care of. I am going with my mother and my sister. We have only booked a one way ticket as we do not know for how long we will stay as it depends on his condition. We found the news out on July 1st which is why I was not able to drop the classes in time. I can include proof of travel as well as a letter from any family member. I understand this is not ideal and I plan to take these courses again during the winter/fall. One of the classes, BIOL102 I was just retaking in hopes of getting a better grade. Please let me know if there is anything else I should do.

Appeal Grounds
Appeals to the Board of Studies must include a letter based on one or more of the Grounds for Appeal (Appeal Regulation 3.4). What are the grounds you are basing your appeal on?
- The Associate Dean's decision did not follow the rules of procedural fairness. A breach of procedural fairness includes such things as the Associate Dean failed to:
- Make a reasonable decision in your appeal. A “reasonable” decision is one that is based on evidence, thought out and supported by facts and logical inferences from the facts. To be reasonable, the decision must contain adequate reasons for the conclusions.
Appeal Grounds Details: Hello, hope you are doing well.
I am appealing the Associate’s Dean decision as I feel that it was not reasonable. The documentation of proof had a mistake on them. I obtained those from a travel agent and due to the stress of the situation I did not check them correctly. I am leaving Toronto today at 6:20pm and am traveling to the hospital which my grandfather is at which is in Bologna, Italy. I have had a difficult year with my family as there were many issues which affected me greatly. I did expect my grandfathers condition to greatly worsen this summer. I found out that he is a critical state on July 1st, right after the deadline. If I had known earlier I would’ve dropped the classes without having to appeal. I consider my grandfather being near death an “extenuating circumstance” which has affected my academic performance. This has taken place after the drop deadline (July 1st) and has greatly affected me psychologically. My grandfather spent a lot time with me, raising me when my parents were occupied with their jobs. He took me to school, to my extracurriculars, he spent the weekends with me. My grandfather means the world to me. He could pass away this summer and I would just like to spend the last few moments that I can dedicated to him. I feel that the decision made was insensitive. I understand that I have had a difficult year but this is not something that I could have predicated.
