Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Stephenson,

I am writing to submit an appeal regarding my request to drop the DEVS 220 (Summer, 2023) course due to extenuating circumstances. My name is Nicolas Quito Rojas, and I would like to explain the reasons behind my appeal.

The basis for my request stems from a series of challenges I have been facing, both in terms of my course load and my economic situation. Last November, one of my housemates experienced a devastating accident during homecoming, which nearly cost him his life. Since that traumatic incident, I have been dealing with significant emotional stress and anxiety, which led me to seek an appeal and drop a course due to the impact on my mental well-being. Despite the ongoing stress, I made efforts to catch up with my academics.

In discussions about my academic progress, it was suggested that taking summer courses would be beneficial to help me get back on track. I enrolled in three courses with heavy content for the summer term. However, I am facing economic hardships as my parents are unable to support me financially during the summer. This financial insecurity has added significant stress to my already demanding workload. Moreover, to prioritize my studies, I had to quit my job, which further intensified my financial concerns and anxiety.

Given the challenging circumstances, I reached out to Professor Fanning, who has been guiding me throughout the course. He has assessed my current standing and advised that it would be in my best interest to appeal for a late drop of the course and retake it in the fall. After careful consideration, I fully agree with his recommendation and intend to retake the course during the fall semester. While I understand the potential impact on my graduation timeline, I believe that prioritizing my well-being and academic success outweighs any potential delay. Thus, I am willing to extend my studies to a fifth year to accommodate these courses properly.

I have already discussed my situation with Professor Fanning, and he agrees with my decision. He also supports the idea of retaking the course in the fall.

Thank you for your understanding and consideration of my appeal. I genuinely believe that dropping this course is the most suitable course of action for my overall well-being and academic progress. By reducing my course load, I will be able to focus and excel in the remaining two courses, which will provide me with a much-needed sense of relief. I appreciate your attention to this matter and your support in ensuring the best possible outcome for my academic journey.

Sincerely,

Nicolas Quito Rojas
