Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Hello,

I am hoping I will be able to drop BIOL 103, PHAR 100, as well as HLTH 102 from the Winter 2023 semester. I have already submitted an appeal in the Fall semester for BIO 102, which got dropped, and explained how I was going to change my routine and get as much help as possible to be successful in the second semester.

To reexplain my situation, I started the year deciding to share a double room with a teammate. I thought it would be a good idea to live with someone living a similar experience as me. As the semester started and weeks went by, I learned that my roommate was having major mental health issues and had been struggling with her mental health for some time. Of course, I wanted to help and be there for her but for some time I did not realize the severity of the situation or the impact it was having on me. This got to a point where I was trying to accommodate each of her needs which made me forget about mine. Looking back I see that being her roommate and trying to change my schedule/routine to fit her needs was mentally draining and took a toll on my productivity and therefore my ability to balance my academic load. I did not prioritize myself well as I was trying to assist her the best I could. I got caught up in the situation and did not fully notice because I have never experienced a challenge like this before.

At the start of the Winter semester (January 2023) I requested a room change but there were only availabilities on West campus. I did not take up the offer because I was worried about how switching my location further away from campus would affect the routine I was trying to establish. However, the end of February came and I got offered a different room on campus. Even though it was in the middle of the semester/midterms I felt as though I had no choice but to move if I wanted a chance to pass my courses.

I know I previously said that if the circumstances were different, my results would’ve been better, but I was only able to make a change too late in the year, which didn’t necessarily help. I was also already behind and needed these 18 units to stay a student-athlete so I just tried to stick with it. I hope you can understand that my first year was not at all what I hoped it would be and I will be taking every chance I can to make it up in the next few years, and these appeals would be a great start to help achieve my goals here at Queen’s.

Thank you for your time and considerations,

Vanessa Campeau

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: I am currently taking summer courses to make up for my failed attempts in year one. I am also meeting weekly with my Student-Athlete Academic Mentor (Milana McNamee) as well as a Student-Athlete Mental Health Coach (Becky Haist) to make sure I get back on track for my second year. I am committed to get better overall and still do great things at Queen's University despite these setbacks.
