Petition Letter
Petition Letter: To whom it may concern, I am petitioning for a late course drop for ANAT 100 taken the spring/summer term as a result of extenuating circumstances outlined below.
On Tuesday, May 23, 2023 while eating dinner in my family home, my dad suffered a stroke. He slumped over into his chair and struggled to stay upright and keep his eyes open as my mom yelled and called for an ambulance. Upon his arrival to the hospital we also learned that he was diagnosed with a severe form of cancer called cholangiocarcinoma and a heart condition. We were also informed that the doctor gave him a prognosis of 1 year to live with proper treatment. After a night filled with worry we were informed that his surgery was successful and most of the blood clot was removed from his brain but the man that I once knew was gone. On June 22, 2023 after receiving 2 blows to the head, I was diagnosed with a concussion and advised by my doctors and later my physiotherapist to refrain from activities that trigger my concussion symptoms like school work and screen time. Since my father’s stroke and hearing all of the terrible news, I have not been able to focus on my school work. My days have and are consisting of cooking, cleaning, grocery shopping while my mom works, accompanying my dad to the hospital two to three times a week for his chemotherapy and bloodwork, aiding with his daily exercise to regain the movement and coordination that he lost during the stroke, and attending routine physiotherapy and doctors appointments to ensure proper recovery from my concussion. Also, following his prognosis, I have been trying to spend as much time with him and my family as I can in the hopes of uplifting his quality of life and supporting my family through this trying time. Between helping my dad, my family and focusing on my concussion recovery, I have been unable to do my school work to the best of my abilities. I have not been able to spend as much time as needed to learn the material as I was required to help my dad and my family with most of their needs and after my concussion, trying to learn the course material led to hours of extreme headaches, dizziness and nausea. As a result, my grades in this course do not reflect my academic ability. My concussion was completely unexpected and by the time I tried to drop the course it was too late.
Your care and consideration in this matter will be greatly appreciated.
I am having trouble attaching my medical documentation in the provided area so I will be sending it via email.
