Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Academic),

I hope you are enjoying summer. I have been working up north for most of mine without much cell-service, hence my delay in drafting this petition.

I am writing to petition the following 3 courses from my 2022-23 academic year: (note: all have been graded with an F)

1. PHIL 153 (Fall 2022)
2. ASCX 150 (Winter 2023)
3. FREN 118 (Winter 2023)

Explanation of extenuating circumstances

Regarding PHIL 153, I had contracted RSV severely in October and been in contact with my professors due to missing class and assignments. I then contracted COVID in November (see attached covid test sent to my professors) and by then had lost close to 20 lbs, wasn't sleeping and missed most of my classes. I had alerted all of my professors, and all had advised that I not write my exams and start fresh in the Winter term. They were also aware that I had 2 IB credits (ECON and HIST) to apply to my first academic year and assured me not to worry about the loss of credits. All of the professors for every course (ECON 110A, POLS 110A, FILM 110A) except for PHIL 153 graded me with an NG. So, with PHIL 153, I am asking for the same consideration (to be graded NG) as I am currently graded with an F, which will negatively affect my GPA.

As a separate note, I was not sleeping in part due to illness, but also due to my roommates in my triple (Victoria Hall) who gamed without their headphones until wee hours. The situation got pretty bad, involving Residential Life, and I was eventually moved to another room by February. This all greatly affected me, as I also struggle with ADHD and have academic accommodations for this.

Regarding ASCX 150 and FREN 118, I did not attend these classes and I had been in contact with and academic advisor to discuss dropping both courses, and I had understood through this that they had been dropped. However, this was not the case. I followed up additional times, but had missed the deadline. I contacted both professors who confirmed I did not attend any of their classes and have supporting documentation (attached). As a first year student, I was - and still am - learning to navigate protocols within the system.

I am asking for your consideration as it was not my intention to incorrectly follow protocol and I do not want these Failed Grades to affect my GPA. My intention is to achieve a high GPA in order to apply for post graduate studies. I also need to be reimbursed for the 2 winter courses, which I understand is a step I can complete once my petition is approved.

Looking ahead, I have been in touch with an academic advisor to review my course load for my upcoming year as well as the various departments of the courses I have registered in - and will continue to keep in regular contact through my academic year. I will also consult the protocols more closely as well as logging into Solus more regularly to ensure my records are correct and up-to-date.

I am excited to be returning this September and will be majoring in Economics and am hoping also to complete a minor in Philosophy, as my goal is to study Law.

I hope that the information I have provided is sufficient in order to have the grade status of these courses changed accordingly.
