Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Academic),
On May 23rd, 2023 I received an email informing me that I was required to withdraw from Queen's for 12 months due to my poor performance in my courses. I struggle greatly with my mental health, specifically with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Social Anxiety Disorder, and Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder. My anxiety has acted as a barrier, preventing me from completing assignments due to feeling overwhelmed by the sheer number of assignments I was being assigned. This lead to my poor performance, despite being extremely capable of completing each assignment to a high degree.
Immediately after receiving the email which informed me I was required to withdraw, I became completely overwhelmed. I had numerous panic attacks, had a more heightened sense of anxiety, and fell into a depression. It is extremely difficult to receive this news, much less compose a concise argument for why I should be allowed to return to Queen's this fall within 15 days. The shame and embarrassment clouded my ability to think and for the past 2 months I would have an anxiety attack whenever I opened my laptop to try to compose a petition letter. Therefore it has taken me more than the 15 business days since receiving the instructor's decision of the informal review to be able to get past the barrier my anxiety sets for me.
I have my petition letter and my academic plan ready to submit. I would like more than anything the chance to come back to Queen's this fall and am therefore asking to waive the petition deadline due to the extenuating circumstance of my severe anxiety and poor mental health.
Thank you very much for your consideration,
Fiona Taylor
