Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean of Studies,
I am appealing the deadline of May 08, 2015 to add two summer courses, COMM200 (Introduction to Business) and COMM251 (Organizational Behaviour).
The explanation contributing to why I did not meet the deadline to apply for summer course enrollment is as a result of being misguided in my academic advising meeting. This past April of 2015 I had an appointment to speak with a Queens Arts and Science academic adviser regarding my options to switch my major (Economics) and minor (Political Science) around, for reasons unrelated to this appeal. Upon learning that I would not have the space to take electives throughout the fall and winter terms of my next 2 years, I decided on the advice of my counselor that my best option would be to take them in the summer and further, was told that the deadline to apply for summer online courses was May 11th. Though it is no excuse as to why I personally did not further research the summer deadline, I entrusted my academic adviser to relay accurate information regarding important cut off dates, something I see as an honest mistake on the schools behalf. The result of being told an incorrect date is at the fault of my adviser, the result of not additionally looking into that date is at the fault of myself, something I rightfully acknowledge and have taken full responsibility for.
Having both a major and minor minimizes my ability to take courses outside of my required degree plan and as a result of going into my third year I am gradually running out of time to complete other courses of interest. Thus, these two summer courses are quite significant to my time and studies at Queens. I took the initiative and spent an increasing amount of time working on this appeal process in collaboration with the School of Business, the Arts and Science office, distancing studies and the associated professors in order to ensure that I am able to begin class.

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: Should my appeal be granted I plan to achieve academic success in the two previously mentioned commerce courses through hard work, time commitment and organization. I intend to reach out to my professors and fellow classmates in order to catch up on material I missed in the time I was not present. Both professors are confident I can excel in their courses with some extra effort; this can be seen throughout their documentation. I have arranged to set up a meeting with the professors in order to discuss how I can be caught up with course assignments and readings. I am further committed to taking a week off work in order to dedicate my undivided attention to these courses to get where I am required to be, alongside my peers.
Additionally, I have been in correspondence with Professor McCaugherty of COMM200, Professor Rowbotham of COMM251 and Elisa Mullins, the Undergraduate Chair of the Business Department at Queens. My appeal will include documentation of their acknowledgment that I am currently going through this process and that it may take a few weeks to finalize and support for my request to add these summer courses late. I genuinely appreciate your consideration and patience. I hope to hear back from you with a decision in favour of my appeal.
