Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,

My name is Adrian Addison and I am an international student in the Arts and Science Faculty. I am petitioning the faculty’s decision that I must withdraw from Queen’s for 1 year so I will be able to take classes this semester.
Around my senior year in high school two years ago, I was unfortunately diagnosed with two conditions (from the attached doctor’s letter) that have caused some inflammation in my body. Despite that, I still managed to achieve my first full-year 4.0 GPA during my senior year to finish strong enough to be able to attend Queens. After being told about my condition, my mom and I were completely surprised as I had never drunk alcohol, smoked, or taken any toxic supplements before. As a result, I was able to see a doctor who explained all the conditions to me and said it could be from a condition I was born with called G6PD. From then on, I started to take the medication prescribed by him for those conditions.

During my first year in Queens, I struggled to concentrate on my classes and even suffered abdominal pain that required me to see a local doctor around Kingston a few weeks before final exams in December of 2021. Though I always attended my classes and completed weekly assignments, I kept struggling to keep my mind off thinking about my health and kept questioning if my health would deteriorate rapidly throughout my time at Queens. As a result, I found it so difficult to be able to concentrate and study for the final exams. During summer breaks from both 2022 and 2023, I was able to return to the US (my hometown) to see my doctor and go through minor procedures such as biopsies and he was able to get a clearer understanding of my condition.

Due to receiving the necessary medication for my condition and routine blood work, I am more confident that through a better diet and exercise, I will be able to improve my health and also be focused on achieving higher grades at Queens. I fully understand that Queens is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and it is important for me to take classes seriously and achieve a higher academic standing at Queens for me to pursue my hopes and goals for the future. In fact, currently, as I am writing this letter, I am at home in the US, and after having conversations with both my mom and doctor, we’ve been wondering if I may have to take classes online so I can keep up with my routine blood work to ensure that my condition hasn’t worsened unknowingly. I do believe that staying in the US, so that my mom is able to take me to see my doctor more often to monitor my progress, would definitely help me feel comfortable completing my courses online. However, if I must attend classes physically in Kingston, I will certainly try to find a way to get blood work done more to monitor my progress. Either way, if given another opportunity, I will be focused on working as hard as possible to complete all my courses and eliminate any distractions that would affect my ability to perform well.

Sincerely,

Adrian Addison

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: Currently in Bachelor of Arts with a plan not selected as of yet as I need to complete the credits necessary to be eligible for plan selection in May

As a full-time student, I will ensure that my course load is not excessive but enough for me to obtain the credits needed to be able to select a plan.

Though challenged by health conditions, I will always keep in contact with my doctor and will also speak to my academic advisor for the best possible suggestions for me to be able to achieve academic success. I will also look to seek counseling from Queens if I ever get distracted by these circumstances and am not fully focused on my courses

I've usually been comfortable with understanding course readings and lectures but in the event I am confused with anything, will always be open to asking questions and attending office hours to be able to speak to my instructors, in order for me to understand all the content needed for upcoming exams

I have spoken to my academic advisor previously and will also look to find time to consult with Academic Success Services for more knowledge on how to manage my time efficiently and develop better study habits to prepare for upcoming exams. By managing my time well, I will be able to make sure I attend all my class lectures and not fall behind on any classwork

I have all the financial resources needed thankfully and currently am not employed as I want to focus my attention on completing all my courses to achieve academic success

I am also interested in booking a career counseling appointment to explore pathways just to make sure I am comfortable with taking the appropriate classes for me to achieve a better academic standing

After discussions with my mom and doctor, I will also speak to my academic advisor about taking classes exclusively online to stay in the US to be able to keep up with routine blood work to monitor my health while also achieving academic success.
