Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Jenn Stephenson,

I am petitioning to add the course PHAR370 (Fall, 2023) after the add course deadline.

I am currently in a 499 project for life science specialization and had always been planning on taking 4 courses in the fall semester and 2 courses in the winter semester to account for the heavier workload towards the end of my project. I had initially enrolled in PHAR370 however was placed on the waitlist. The weekend of the add course deadline I found that I was still on the waitlist and contacted an academic advisor to change my plan for the year as I was hoping to be in PHAR370 during the fall. This is a mandatory requirement for my program and I need it to graduate. When I contacted my academic advisor I found out that the class was in fact not full but that I was just on the waitlist due to a conflict in my schedule. At this point she informed me that to get off the waitlist I would need documentation from each instructor to enroll me in the course with the conflict. Unfortunately I did not know this was a requirement and I was not aware that SOLUS displays a conflict by keeping you on the waitlist. Since this occurred so last minute I was not able to receive permission from my instructors by the add course deadline. I am worried that by not taking this course in the fall I will be sacrificing my work in the winter and that along with other courses that are only offered in the winter and will require more of a time commitment I will be setting myself up for a heavy semester that could jeopardize my graduation.

I really appreciate you taking the time to consider this.

Thank you,
Amy Richardson (she/her)

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: I have consulted my academic advisment report in SOLUS to ensure that I am on track for my degree requirements. I have also consulted my supervisors and coordinators for my 499 to ensure that I am planning adequatley by trying to take PHAR370 prior to the winter semester. I know the heavy requirements of my winter courses such as BCHM316 and I am hoping to be enroled in PHAR370 during the fall to ensure that I do not overload my winter semester and jeopardize my graduation.
Considering strategies for success, next semester when working with SOLUS I will be sure to investigate the meaning of any other waitlist positions. I now know that a conflict can result in a waitlist position and I will be sure to check this if I am ever in this situation again.
