Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Studies),

I am submitting an appeal requesting to waive the appeal deadline for the Winter Term of 2014. In this term my performance was very poor as a result of the psychiatric treatment and the family issues, which I had been dealing with. The first year of university proved difficult me, due to the myriad of disturbances in my personal life and my psychiatric diagnosis detracting me from my studies.

Through this winter term I had been facing growing struggles cognitively, emotionally, and physically. My lack of ability to focus on my academics, as well as complete work on deadlines because of my psychiatric issues, as well as dealing with a sibling¿¿s psychiatric issues made this almost impossible. In addition a close family member had past away my first year, and the trauma of this death was still fresh, following me into my winter term. I often found myself confounded, and unable to do things thing, and ultimately overwhelmed by all these issues. This left me in a state of mental unease, and my situation became worse and worse, as my sleep, focus and ability to work was significantly hindered.

From late March into the summer of 2014, my psychiatrist alongside a psychologist diagnosed me with a long-term psychiatric issue (which hadn¿¿t been diagnosed before). Then they began a rigorous treatment, which proved to be very tiresome. This had a great emotional toll on me. Along with the adjustment of medication during these months, my mood, emotions, and thoughts were all over the place, leaving me unable to study or focus on anything else. All these things that were happening in my life made the appeal deadline seem so distant, and to be candid, appeared to be the least of my worries at the time. Thus, I had missed the deadline for the appeal as my treatment followed through into the summer. I would have appealed earlier but when I had found out from my counsellor that I could appeal the deadline after fall term, I was facing grave traumas such as homelessness, suicide, and homophobia.

I sincerely wish I had been able to write my appeal in the twenty-one day deadline. I would greatly appreciate if I was given permission to appeal my marks for the Winter Term of 2014, which evidently show the effect my condition had on my academics. Even though I did miss the deadline, I did receive much needed treatment, which should have been treated in my childhood. However I hope that I can be given a chance to appeal the marks, which I had been unable to do in the allotted time period due to force of circumstance.

Kindly,
Hassan Saleem

Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,

I am appealing my mark for Winter Term 2014 as well as Winter Term 2015, as my turbulent circumstances have lead to a significant hindrance in my academic performance for the past two years. For Winter Term 2014 I would like to request a credit standing for STAT 263 as well as MATH 111, and a course drop for CISC 121. For the Winter Term 2015 I am requesting a credit standing for CHEM 112, and a course drop for PHYS 117 and BCHM 218.

The last two years of university have been very harsh and not due to the transition into university, but rather because of the deleterious change in my personal life and health. I was living at home and had many issues including a close death in the family overseas, while dealing with my siblings mental health issues alone since my parents were away. The mental and physical strain was tiresome and I was often at the point of complete exhaustion and this had exasperated my health issues. In Winter Term 2014 I had a mental health crisis, which had debilitated my performance and was a long-term health issue, which had not previously been diagnosed. This in itself was quite a shocking revelation to me. I was receiving treatment and my medications were being adjusted from March into the exam period and into the summer, and along with it came harsh side effects. Therefore I was unable to provide the time and commitment into my academics, which resulted in grades that were extremely poor.

This year has also proven to be extremely challenging, as I had to deal with a myriad of issues, which ensued upon me and left me in a situation where I was left in a state of panic and hopelessness. During the Winter Term 2015, I was left homeless after coming out, and I didn¿¿t have a place to stay so my academics at the time were left to the side, as I struggled to survive. I was eventually able to find a place, however with my worsening situation and the position I was in, my mental state was quickly deteriorating. This led to my hospitalization at Kingston General Hospital where I was kept under psychiatric watch. I received rigorous treatment with the help of a team of medical professionals. The effects of medication, my mental state, and severe insomnia put me in a position, which set me up for failure for this term. Thus the outcome of this term was also disheartening. I had failed two courses, and received sub-par marks for the other two. I was surprised that I had passed any courses, but I associate my passing of PSYCH 100 and CHEM 112 to the fact I had attempted to take CHEM 112 last year, and took a similar course to PSYCH 100 in high school. I know I could have done much better in all these courses, as I have always been a hard working academic oriented student. However the unfortunate events that unravelled this term compromised my ability to perform.

At the moment there are many things that I am doing in order to restore balance to my hectic life. Firstly I am consistently seeing my medical professional team, which includes my doctor, psychiatrist, and counsellor. I am also still seeing my Queen¿¿s counsellor who has been helpful throughout the year, and during these tough times. Since I am still undergoing treatment I dropped out of the courses that I was planning to take, and focusing on my health. It is still very difficult for me, as I have few friends that are in Kingston, leaving me to face these issues all by myself. However now that I have a support system in place it has become better. My counsellors and doctors also advised me that I should take a year off or only take one course, and I wish to pursue this suggested path. In this break year I will focus on working on my health, as well as taking the time to get my affairs in order so that when I get back I will feel better and devote my full attention to my studies.

Ultimately, these two years have had a momentous emotional toll on me, and I hope these uncontrollable events wont have a lasting hold on my life. I would be very grateful if my appeal was granted, so that when I come back to do my academics the past wont weigh down on me, so that I can focus on a bright optimistic future. School has always been integral to my life, and to be given an opportunity to start anew would be deeply appreciated.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read my appeal.

Sincerely,
Hassan Saleem
