Re: Petition to add class ARTF 447 after the add/drop deadline of Monday, September 18, 2023

Dear Dr. Stephenson:

I am petitioning for the ability to have the program ARTF 447 added to my course curriculum for the Fall 2023 term.

On Wednesday, September 6, 2023, I was informed by my parents who came to campus to personally tell me that my uncle, Bryan Green, had passed away from his battle with cancer, (https://www.ericfnichollsfuneralhome.com/obituary/bryan-green). Arrangements were made for me to return home that weekend to Welland, Ontario. My family and I then traveled to Wallaceburg, Ontario, as visitation would be held for one day only on Monday, September 11th, 2023. The following day I returned to Kingston to resume my attendance at Queen’s University.

As I began following my semester schedule, I had to investigate why ARTF 447 was not part of my academic curriculum. Unfortunately, due to time constraints, class schedule, and illness, I was not able to meet with Alejandro Arauz, Undergraduate Chair, until Thursday, September 21st, 2023. On that day, we were able to discuss my program options, and he informed me that the deadline had passed and I would need to pursue a ‘First Level’ petition.

This petition is for the ability to add ARTF 447 to my Fall 2023 course curriculum. Fine Arts is my registered program of study and I would like to pursue completion of this course during the Fall term, and ARTF 448 during the Winter term. Both of these courses require independent studio time to work on creative projects and to work closely with professors and mentors. I have forwarded Mr. Arauz my 4th Year Project Proposal and Supervisor Request form, which were required for completion of course entry.

Granting me permission into course ARTF 447 would make me eligible for 18 units upon successful completion, including my three electives currently enrolled in the fall term. Additional elective units will be taken in the winter term. In addition, more electives can be taken during the spring and summer months on an online basis, whereas ARTF 447 and ARTF 448, must be completed on campus and in-studio. My goal is to continue to obtain my elective units during the spring and summer term for completion of a BFA Honours degree. As indicated in my Fine Art grades – this is where I excel.

I am an out-of-town student who has invested in living accommodations, living expenses, university tuition, and art supplies. I am trying to optimize both my time and expenditures on my registered program of study in Fine Art, rather than be limited to obtaining electives for an entire school year. Furthermore, I will be financially burdened to consider pursuing an extra year for ARTF 447 and ARTF 448 should I not be granted permission to take these courses this semester and next.

Dr. Stephenson, with all due respect, I am pleading with you to consider extending the add course deadline so I may be permitted to attend the Fine Art course ARTF 447 this semester.
