Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,

I am writing this letter to you today in a request to appeal for standing credit with my CHEM 321, CHEM 323, and PHYS 118 marks. During the winter semester, my younger brother was assaulted. I could not fly home and be with my family during this time. I did poorly on my midterms because my mind was preoccupied, and I continued to struggle through the semester. I started going to therapy during exams because I knew I needed help, but it took me a while to reach out and get it. Once I reached out and found support, my mental health improved but, academically it was too late. Over the summer, I continued to go to therapy, and my mental health improved. I took Physics 118 over the summer and was doing well in the course. I am from BC, and all my family lives there. This summer, there were an unprecedented number of forest fires. My family was heavily affected by this. The week I was scheduled to take my final exam for the course, my grandma and uncle were evacuated from their homes. On the day of the final, their homes were burned down by the Bush Creek East wildfire.
We didn’t know if they had gotten out safely or if they got trapped. I was not in the right mind to take an exam, but I thought I could push through it. I did poorly on the exam, drastically affecting my overall class grade. These situations hindered me from performing to the best of my academic ability. I want to perform to the best of my ability, and I want my GPA to show that. Unfortunately, circumstances out of my control hindered me from doing so. My current GPA does not accurately reflect who I am as a student or human being. I have a passion for learning and a strong desire to succeed. If given a chance, I will show you I can do better. I am working with my therapist, who is helping me process these events.

I appreciate your consideration,
Ayden Harrison
