Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
I am appealing the Faculty¿¿s decision that I must withdraw from Queen¿¿s for a minimum of one year.
During the past several years I have been experiencing several mental health issues which have been having a great effect upon my academic performance and made it difficult for me to focus on my studies. My health problems have made it difficult for me to eat and sleep, leaving me in a state of exhaustion which has made it difficult for me to study and attend class, and made it necessary for me to spend much of the day lying in bed. These difficulties have also made it difficult for me to focus in class and while studying. Severe anxiety attacks before and during tests and exams have also made it difficult for me to perform well. These mental health issues have been affecting me since high school, but became significantly worse upon leaving home and coming to university. During high school I was prevented from seeking help because of the disapproval of my parents, but in the past month I have begun to receive treatment. I have begun to take medication, and already have noticed improvement to my condition. I also plan on receiving counselling and have registered with disability services so that I may receive accommodations during exams. On top of all these changes, I am also considering switching to a major which I have more interest in, and perhaps taking on a lighter course load in the coming year. I strongly believe that all these changes will allow me to succeed academically in the future.
Thank you for taking the time to read my letter.
All the best,
Avery Barre

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: Upon returning to my studies, I intend to change my major, and hope to pursue a degree in either sociology or biology. I am planning on booking an appointment with an academic adviser to help me decide which path I will be best suited for, and to decide the appropriate courses which I should enroll in. I am currently taking online prerequisites for both majors in order to keep my options open.
I have been struggling with mental health related issues the past several years, which have distracted me from my studies and have had a huge impact on my grades. I have begun to take medication for my conditions, which has made it much easier for me to focus on my studies. I have discussed the possibility of increasing my dosage with my physician, and will continue to make frequent appointments to monitor my health condition. I am also going to receive counselling, and plan on making an appointment with Learning Strategies in Stauffer Library to learn tools to help me deal with exam anxiety.
I am now registered with Disability Services, and will be receiving exam accommodations which should allow me to perform much better on tests and exams. I am also considering taking on a lighter course load in the fall, and will discuss this possibility with my physician and an academic adviser closer to the start of the school year.
Overall, I believe that all of these changes will allow me to be successful academically in the coming school year.
Thank you,
Avery Barre
