Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,

I hope this letter finds you well. My name is Julia Schon and I am a 3rd year life sciences student. I am writing this letter to request permission to take 5 elective courses at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona for the winter 2024 semester. I wish to study abroad to gain new academic and personal experiences as well as immerse myself into new cultures. I want to meet new peers, teachers, and other individuals that will help me gain a new perspective on the world. I believe Barcelona is the best place to do this because of its culture, language, and history which will be transformative both academically and personally.

There are several reasons why I am drawn to studying in Barcelona. First, the city’s architect, art, and business fields align with my personal interests. I am interested in taking 5 elective courses that include; Graffiti and Public Sculpture and Urban intervention, Intercultural Communications, Spanish Contemporary Art, Entrepreneurship, New Venture Communication, and Mediterranean Politics. I am currently in my 3rd year of my Life Sciences degree and these courses offered at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona would allow me to step outside of the science courses I take at Queen’s and allow me to take electives I am interested in. While some of these courses may be offered at Queens, taking them in Barcelona, discussing current topics and visiting the art sites in person is something I cannot do here in Kingston. For example, taking courses such as mediterranean politics, intercultural communications, and graffiti and public sculpture and urban intervention in Barcelona will give me a new perspective on topics I am interested in. The Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona offers field trips to complement these courses which is an opportunity I hope to take part in and is unique to this school.

In addition, I have always been interested in learning a different language besides English. Immersing myself in a Spanish speaking country is a great way for me to do this. Being fluent in Spanish would not only enhance my communication skills but also open doors to a plethora of new cultural experiences and connections.

Beyond academics, I am eager to live in Barcelona’s lively and warm atmosphere for my personal growth. I want to engage with the local community, Spanish traditions, and form lasting friendships with peers from various backgrounds. Besides living in Barcelona, I hope to travel to many different countries to experience their cultures as well. I understand that studying abroad involves other commitments such as course selection, visas, finances, accommodations, and travel. I pride myself in being organized and responsible, which is why I am confident that I will successfully manage these tasks as well as balance my studies. I will complete all my work in a timely manner by organizing my schedule and attending all classes.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read this letter. For the reasons stated above, I hope to take 5 elective courses at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona in the winter semester of 2024. I am confident that this experience will broaden my horizons and enhance my skills, preparing me for a successful abroad experience, return to Queens, and future endeavours as a well-rounded member of society.

Warm Regards,

Julia Schon

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: I have worked hard to organize my academic plan to satisfy my requirements and take courses I am interested in, while challenging myself. As a Life Sciences Major, I must complete 120 units total. I have completed my core and supporting courses listed as (BIOL 102, BIOL 103, CHEM 112, BCHM 218, MICR 271, CHEM 281, CHEM 282, PHGY 215 and 216, PHYS 106/107, and MATH 121/124). I must complete 30 units from the LISC A list which I have started by taking PSYC 100, STAM 200, PHGY 290, PHAR 380, and BCHM 370 (18 units). I am required to take 12 more units at the 300/400 level under the LISC List A. Some courses I am interested in taking to satisfy these requirements are EPID 301, BIOL 334, PHGY 350, and HSCI 383.

In addition, I must take 48 units worth of electives. So far I have taken PHAR 100, ENIN 240, IDIS 173, IDIS 373 and IDIS 199 (15 units). On exchange, I plan to take 5 courses that will count as 15 units towards my electives. These include; Urban intervention, graffiti and public sculpture, Intercultural communications, Spanish contemporary art, Entrepreneurship and new venture communication, and Mediterranean politics. I must take 18 units in my 4th year to finish my elective requirements. Some electives I plan to take include; GLPH 271, GLPH 281, ENIN 301, MUSC 114, and FREN 106.

I eagerly await your response and thank you very much for your consideration!
