Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean of Academics,

I hope this letter finds you well. My name is Madison Hartwick (Student ID: 20199639) and I am a 4th year biology student here at Queen's University. I am currently enrolled in the courses BIOL 401 - Experimental Approaches to Animal Physiology and GNDS 335 - Science Fiction and Fantasy, and I am writing to appeal for permission to drop these courses due to unforeseen circumstances of a work injury.

On October 10th, during the reading week, I unfortunately suffered a severe work-related injury in which my fingers were partially amputated and broken. This incident has had a much greater effect on my day-to-day life then I had anticipated, resulting in a prolonged recovery process that has led to my absence from classes for almost a month. The injury has made it extremely challenging for me to focus on my academic commitments and has impeded my ability to engage in the coursework effectively.

I understand the importance of maintaining academic progress and attendance, but given the severity of my situation, both of my professors and I think that dropping would be the best option for me at this time due to the nature of the courses. I am fully committed to making up for the missed coursework and maintaining my academic standing in my 3 other courses, however, my current circumstances make it impractical for me to continue with the demands of BIOL 401 and GNDS 335.
