My name is Hayden Fowler I’m a third year Health Studies student who is also on the Queen’s Men’s Hockey Team. On October 21st in a game against Guelph I hit my head on the ice and sustained a concussion. For the last 2-3 weeks I have had a range of symptoms from severe to mild which are influencing my schoolwork significantly. I have not been able to attend certain classes from my concussion which require me to actively participate in work sessions worth 10% of my final grade. This has had a big impact on my mental health as missing these kinds of assessments due to a concussion really makes it difficult to produce the grade, I know I can achieve. Over the last couple weeks, I have become very anxious and worried about this class in particular and if I will even be able to pass it after I heal from my concussion. I have always been a student who likes to be on top of things and try my best in school. Although after sitting at home for weeks I have fallen behind in my one course to a point that I feel I would rather drop the class – than suffering with the grade I will receive after missing multiple classes worth a large amount of my grade. Overall, this concussion has had a significant impact on my mental health thus making it extremely hard academically. I would really appreciate the opportunity to drop this class and retake it at another time because of my concussion and the toll it is taking on my mental health.
