Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: I am writing to petition to drop Film340 (Fall, 2023). Provided Medical documentation reports my admission to hospital on October 24, 2023, and suggestion of time off by from academics October 24- November 20, 2023. During my time in hospital, I was unable to complete any academic commitments, putting me behind 3 weeks in all my classes. The last date to drop fall courses, October 30, fell under the timeframe I was admitted to hospital. Due to the acute onset of my condition, I was uncertain of the impact this would have on my academic performance prior to the drop deadline. Following my stay in hospital I will continue to need weekly medical support for the foreseeable future. My decline in physical wellness has greatly impacted my normal energy levels. At this moment in time, I need to reevaluate how I will be engaging with my academics and how I best believe I can be successful in the completion of my degree.
Prior to these new circumstances It was my goal to receive both an Honours bachelor’s degree as well as a certificate for my graduation in June 2024. Given my current position I am proposing that I post-pone my certificate plan until after graduation and devote my focus on the completion of my BFAH. With my current academic standing to graduate in June with only a BFAH and no certificate I need to complete 18.0 units in my core courses (ARTF447, fall 2023 and ARTF448 winter 2024) as well as one 3-unit elective. I am currently enrolled in my ARTF447 (9 units), as well as two electives ENIN250 (3 units), and FILM340 (3 Units) which is 3 units more than what I need to complete my 120.0 units required for my degree plan. I choosing to drop FILM340 because I feel that ENIN250 resonates more closely with my personal goals and would benefit the future completion of my certificate program. I am certain that a future completion of my certificate program would improve the level at which I am able to engage and preform in my courses moving forward. While in recovery I feel it is of the utmost importance to prioritize the distribution of my energy. Reducing my course load would significantly improve my academic performance as well as provide me the space to continue to receive medical care and manage my energy. For these reasons it would be in my best interest both in wellness and academics, to drop Film340 (Fall, 2023).
